Hands On Atlanta Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit

Atlanta, GA -

For the last 12 years, Hands On Atlanta, in partnership with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc., has presented the Atlanta community with an event that highlights the pervasive power of individuals to change our city and our nation.

This tribute will examine the nation’s most critical social problems and engage participants in action-oriented social issue workshops and a day of service, offering people of all ethnicities and backgrounds an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their role in social change.

Community Workshopswill be held during the week prior to the federal King Holiday, January 8-12,2006.Hands On Atlanta will host a series of workshops including: A Community Leadership Workshop Series informing participants how to bring about change by getting involved in advocacy, activism and the political process; The King Service Summit Film Series featuring the stories of ordinary citizens working to improve social conditions for themselves and for their communities; The Voices of Freedom Literary Festival which includes topical discussions with local civil rights leaders; Conversation Cafés, intimate gatherings offering Atlantans the opportunity to interact and converse with the region’s many local civil rights heroes about the efforts of the past and the needs that still remain today; and The Civil Rights History Bus Tour, a one-hour bus tour throughout the King District and Civil Rights landmark sites.

Symposia will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2006. Hands On Atlanta will host The Service Summit Symposia that connects Dr. King’s philosophy and his principals of diversity activism with Hands On Atlanta’s mission of volunteer service. Conversations will be lead by noteworthy personalities and focus on King related dialogue, a youth summit, national and international nonviolence campaigns, faith and social justice, and economic and community development.
