The Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
Atlanta, GA -Long before it was a national holiday, the people of Atlanta were celebrating the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. and his efforts to change the way our world views equality. People from all over the southeast come together to honor the fallen Nobel laureate through various performances, religious services, and concerts.

The 2007 King Holiday Observance will mark the 78th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the thirty-ninth Annual King Center Program and the twenty-first anniversary of the National Holiday in Dr. King's honor. It is celebrated in some form in more than 100 countries around the world.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of America's most controversial and charismatic leaders. Born January 15, 1929 inside his family's Atlanta home on 501 Auburn Avenue, NE. MLK, Jr. was surrounded from birth by community minded role models, including his mother and very influential father, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. Atlanta celebrates its native son every year during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. This year’s theme: Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On…Not a Day Off. The theme reiterates the importance of remembering Dr. King’s work and legacy, celebrating his birthday as a national holiday and acting on his teachings and principles of nonviolence and human rights. It also serves as a reminder that the holiday is a day on for community service initiatives and programs promoting interracial cooperation, not just a day off from work or school. The month of January in Atlanta is a hands-on opportunity to observe the life and legacy of one of America’s greatest citizens…events include the Annual Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner, a concert featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a Service Summit for organizations promoting positive social change, and an annual Commemorative Service all part of Atlanta’s one-of-a-kind celebration for its most adored citizen, the one and only Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., one of America's most controversial and charismatic leaders, was born on January 15, 1929 at his family's home at 501 Auburn Avenue, NE. The son of influential Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., MLK, Jr. was surrounded from birth by community-minded parents and role models.

Emory University joins in with several different events honoring Dr. King. The annual King Remembrance March and Rally is a high point, as are the speakers who follow. Throughout the month, there are film screenings, public seminars, and artwork featuring Dr. King, his work, and his legacy.
