Six Flags Over Georgia turns 41!

By Michelle Kish, General Sales Manager, Tourist Network

Atlanta, GA -

After the success of his original Six Flags park in Arlington, Texas, park founder Angus Wynne began searching for a location for a second park. He decided upon a parcel of land located along the Chattahoochee River just west of the city of Atlanta, and design work started in 1963. When the park opened in 1967, Six Flags became the first 'multi-gate' theme park operator in the United States.

Where did the name Six Flags come from? The initial design and theming of Six Flags Over Georgia was inspired by six different flags that have flown over the state (or, perhaps more accurately, the lands that are now part of it) during its history. The six flags in question are those of France, Spain, the United States, United Kingdom, the Confederate States of America and the state of Georgia.

After the success of his original Six Flags park in Arlington, Texas, park founder Angus Wynne began searching for a location for a second park. He decided upon a parcel of land located along the Chattahoochee River just west of the city of Atlanta, and design work started in 1963.

Today Six Flags Over Georgia is the Southeast's largest regional theme park. It's located on 230-acre's in Austell, Georgia and on March 1, 2008 the doors opened for the 41st time!

Six Flags Over Georgia, like most amusement parks, prides itself on its roller coaster collection. Aside from the roller coasters, Six Flags Over Georgia maintains a large number of other rides and attractions. Like for instance the Riverview Carousel, one of only three remaining five-abreast carousels known to exist and a member of the National Register of Historic Places.

This year the park has many new attractions and activities for the season, including the May launch of Thomas Town, an exciting new Thomas & Friends-themed area. Thomas Town will also feature a playground area and a merchandise store where guests can purchase the latest Thomas & Friends™ apparel, books, toys and train sets. Also new to the park this season is the addition of "40 Fun Things For Kids To Do." This listing highlights the numerous activities for kids to participate in while at the park, and includes elements such as the all new 3-Point Challenge basketball game, the Nintendo Wii™ Experience and the many kids rides such as those found in Bugs BunnyWorld.

Whether you're excited about shaking hands with super heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman or celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mind Bender, which is the world's first triple-loop roller coaster, come out and enjoy Six Flags Over Georgia!

The park's operating hours during opening weekend will be 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. The park is open on weekends during March.

Six Flags Over Georgia season passes are available for the lowest price of the season at $69.99. Kids 48" and under can get in FREE with the purchase of an adult ticket available only through participating Publix supermarkets.
