Baggage space is available to all passengers with tickets on most long distance trains and several short distance trains. Passengers will want to consult the Amtrak timetable for the most current availability on their train. Amtrak does offer checked baggage service at many stations and on many trains. However, not all stations, trains or Thruway services on any given route may handle checked baggage. This can also be found on the Amtrak timetables.
All baggage should be checked at least 30 minutes before departure (one hour for bicycles that need to be boxed.) Allow additional time during busy periods. Baggage checked too late will be delayed. Baggage needs to be packed in suitcases, garment bags, etc. with strong resistant handles that will hold up to normal handling. Labels should be complete with name and address. Once your baggage is checked in, you will receive a claim check for each piece. Once you have arrived, baggage will be available within 30 minutes.
Baggage will be claimed by using your claim check numbers. But if you are unable to claim your baggage right away, Amtrak will store your baggage free for two days. The charge will be $1.50 per day after that. Connecting trains or motorcoaches will require Amtrak to transfer your baggage between them. But if no checked baggage service is available, the individual is required to check the baggage, claim it and transfer it to your next train.
