Atlanta Sports

Atlanta, GA -

When the Summer Olympics called Atlanta home in 1996, the world was formally introduced to the "Gateway to the South!" Athletes from around the globe flocked to the city to compete against the very best the world has to offer. The event brought international attention to Atlanta, as well as a huge boost to the economy and infrastructure of the city.

Atlanta and the Olympics

...this city has been climbing the ladder to stardom for a number of years, and its exciting sports history has played an important part. Professional sports came to Atlanta in the 1960's, and nothing has been the same since! The 60's represented many things to many different people, but to the people of Atlanta, it meant the arrival of the City's pride and joy... The Atlanta Braves baseball team, The Atlanta Falcons football team and The Atlanta Hawks Basketball Team.

The Atlanta Braves baseball team originated in Milwaukee and was known as the Doves until around the turn of the century. The name was derived from their owners, the Dovey Brothers. The team's name was changed to the Beaneaters and, later, to the Red Caps, before the team was tabbed The Braves by John Montgomery Ward in 1912. In 1936, a fan poll decided on The Bees for the team's namesake until the popularity of the Braves finally won the name game. In 1941, they returned to the name they are now famous for... The Braves!!

What is a great baseball team without great players... Dale Murphy #3, Warren Spahn #21, Phil Niekro #35, Eddie Mathews #41 and world famous, Hank Aaron #44.

When tickets are available, you can catch The Braves at their new stadium, Turner Field, located appropriately at 755 Hank Aaron Drive. Construction on Turner Field was finished in 1997 and 50,000 dedicated fans pack the stands on a daily basis.

When baseball season comes to an end, a whole new kind of excitement starts to build. From the diamond to the gridiron... the Atlanta Falcons! The Georgia Dome is home to the Falcons and regularly caters to over 71,000 football fans, all cheering on Atlanta's only NFL team.
