Visiting Antoines, I felt truly humbled–––the way you do in the presence of an old soul with much wisdom to pass on . Each room is a sanctuary to the history of meals, events and people of New Orleans. You can literally FEEL how much those walls hold, and you can start to hear the swish of skirts, the whisper of gossip, the clink of forks. Everyone who works there is proudly and deeply commited, and many have worked there for decades–––as in three or four. Needless to say, the food is almost religiously prepared. No one touches the recipes until they've earned the privilege through years and years of service. There are customers who would taste the slightest tampering with a sauce, so it is no small matter. You must try the Oysters Rockefeller, of course, and I recommend the pompano, but whatever you do choose, there will be flavors as evocative of time, romance, lives well lived and history as the rooms themselves. Don't miss this restaurant: it is truly like no other.

I'm really pretty disappointed in myself. I've lived part-time in New Orleans since 1991, and I recently moved here full time. Last Friday is the FIRST time I've ever eaten at Antoine's. How many years of fun and great food I have missed! The Oysters Rockefeller (they INVENTED Oysters Rockefeller) are amazing - so unlike all the copycat versions I have enjoyed over the years... light, delicious Pompano topped with lump crabmeat - amazing! We ate in the main dining room, and it is so beautiful - our waiter is third generation at Antoine's - his father and grandfater made careers of expert service, and they take such pride it it. We ate too much, drank too much and had so MUCH FUN! I have a of years to make up for... my advise is... go NOW!

A few Friday's ago my girlfriends and I wanted to have a "ladies lunch" and decided to go to Antoine's. It was so much fun! Our waiter was fun, not stuffy at all. The potato souffle was great with the bernaise sauce to dip in, just like the waiter told us. The table next to us got a Baked Alaska with their names written on it for their anniversary, it was so cool! What a fun way to spend a hot afternoon- eating and drinking in one of the oldest restaurants in the USA!
