Cafe Du Monde is one of those experiences you cannot leave New Orleans without having experienced. Having grew up in New Orleans I cannot count the number of times I either took the time to read a newspaper and enjoy my beignets and strong chicory coffee; or grabbing a bag to take to work on the fly. I can tell you though it's really hard to describe the sense of peace and nostalgia you feel sitting under that green and white awning in the morning, drinking great coffee, eating incredible beignets and watching the people go by. Or having a total stranger sitting next to you strike up a conversation; you are both glad you did. The warmth, the friendliness, the hospitality; this is the real spirit of New Orleans and a MUST experience.

On the very, very short list of Must Do While in New Orleans, Cafe du Monde is there and it oughta be. NOt only should you do coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde because it's a classic thing to do, but because nothing, no telling and retelling by anyone else, captures what it feels like to sit there at those rickety cafe chairs, order from the waitresses who remember everything, and look out over busy Decatur Street and all the people passing there. If you did it every day, every day would be a little bit different (and from what I understand, some people DO!) There is a very special chemistry to the beignets and cafe au laits eaten right there that simply can't be recreated anywhere else. If you go with kids, be careful: they will soon learn that blowing on the powdered sugar and spraying each other is too fun to resist. Even thinking of this place makes me ache to be there!

Cafe Du Monde is a New Orleans Classic! Since it is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week there is not the right time or wrong time to go there. It's a great light breakfast, it's a perfect afternoon snack to get a little sugar rush and even more fun in the late evening when you get tired of the smoke in the bars and just want to sit and talk. It is great for all ages, young and old- everyone loves the sweet taste of powder sugar and a crispy beignet. Now if you are stuck in conventions all day, suprize your team and jump in a cab and go to Cafe Du Monde early in the morning. They have a To Go window to the far right, you can get a bag full of beignets to take back to everyone at the convention center or hotel. They will think you are a king or queen for bringing such a true New Orleans treat for them! Also do note no other food is served here, only coffee, cafe au lait, hot chocolate, bottle water and beignets. So don't plan on getting a big meal :)
