Galatoire's, you just want to bend on one knee, or tip your hat or take it's hand and kiss it––––some sort of shmoozy display of respect. It is a true Dame of a restaurant, and I love it like I love a true French bistro all the way over in France. I love the chandeliers, the tile floors, the mirrors for peering into and spying on people while they eat, and the confidence it has to say that no, you can't reserve for the busiest meal of all (Friday lunch) because too many people want to eat there and you will have to stand in line with the rest of them, no matter who you are! There is so much dignity to Galatoire's, and like steak frites or roasted chicken in that French bistro I mentioned, a dish at Galatoire's is the original, best eaten right on the spot.

New Orleans is heavy in tradition and one of the oldest traditions is Friday lunches. This goes back to 1800's and we have not stopped yet. Galatoire's is one of 10 restaurants that keeps this tradition of long lunches going, and it's one of the most well known. The idea is you start you lunch around 1 pm or so, now Galatoire only takes reservations for the second floor. If you want to do this, I will call to get in. The locals usually show up around 12:30 -1:00, and many of them have been coming for years and have "standing" reservations. Don't be upset if you eat on the second floor, it's still the same great food and fun experience. Your meal should take atleast 2 1/2 hours, or your not drinking enough! The fun part is to order slowly and share everything. I have to admit I love the appetizers so much, that on occasion that is all I have ordered, a series of appetizers like shrimp remoulade, or my favorite Crabmeat Maison. If you have more than 3 people I would get the Grand Goute, it is a combo appetizer plate that has everything on it! (it's a little much for 2 people, but if you do that and share an entree you will be STUFFED) I am not a vegetairian, but I always get the same two dishes, either Stuffed Eggplant or Crabmeat Sardou (it's artichoke bottoms filled with yummy crab meat)that is if I get an entree. Both are so rich and super, I crave them! I have to admit I have never made it to dessert only dessert drinks. And they have a couple secret dessert drinks, see if you can get your waiter to offer you any- are you daring enough to try the dishwasher's coffee??? (Side note- with new staff since 2005 not all the waiters will know about the dishwasher's coffee, but if you like booze in your coffee it's worth asking about, it will kick your butt!!) If you are doing this properly you will have consumed at least one bottle of wine or champagne per hour per person!! The idea of Friday lunch is by the time you are done eating and making your "business" deals, it's 4-4:30 and no reason to go back to the office. You don't have to be working to experience this, if you on vaction then you better go up to 2 bottles of wine an hour! So go on and take a long lunch!
