Bad experience, 2005-12-18

We used to go here often. Then, we had "the experience". We had some family visiting from out of town, and took them here, as we often did, for a nice (heavy) seafood dinner. Our waitress was assigned two tables: ours, and a group of golfers. Apparently, she saw a larger tip with the golfers, and abandoned us to wait on them. We were seated next to some kind of machine that beeped almost continuously while we were eating and trying to talk. We had to serve ourselves, get our own silverware, beg another waitress to get our drinks, get our own refills, get our own replacement napkins, and remove piles of used plates from our table by placing them on an adjacent empty table. To add insult to injury, the cashier tried adding a large tip to our bill (18%!) because we had a large group! Personally, I tip 10% at buffets because I serve my own food. I think it's outrageous for a buffet restaurant to add a large tip when someone has a large group, but that's my opinion, to which I am entitled. When I pointed out all the problems, including that we served everything ourselves and did not plan on leaving a tip for our waitress, the manager became upset with us! We had to argue with her, and I told her I would not sign the credit card slip until she took the tip off! She very reluctantly removed the tip. We handed a cash tip to the waitress who brought us our drinks, but our waitress got no tip because she didn't deserve one. I may go back in the future, but it will be a long time, maybe after they get a new owner! 3 out of 10 stars (for the large selection of food, otherwise they'd get a "1".) When our customers ask where to go for a seafood buffet, I send them to Benjamin's Calabash in Restaurant Row or Surfside. Restaurant Row for the large variety of foods, and Surfside for great crab legs.
