If you're familiar with FOX's, "So You Think You Can Dance" you're familiar with one of the judge's putting the very BERST dancers on the Hot Tamale Train. After a week of fine dining in Key West...and I mean everywhere we went was better than the last...we ended up with our hosts at Hot Tin Roof and if a restaurant could in fact go on a train, Hot Tin Roof would have all the free tickets needed for a long ride on the Hot Tamale Train! It was a spectacular "winter" evening, we sat outside and from beginning to end pretty much felt as if we finally understood the real meaning of fine dining in paradise! Even the walk there, including the walk up the stairs to the cozy "waiting room" (where we had several delicious drinks) prepared us beautifully for the special evening ahead. Hot Tin Roof is upstairs but on the water and part of the Ocean Key Resort that also houses the island's best spa, Spa Terre and the entire property boasts some of the most beautiful landscaping anywhere on the island, plus it’s one of the very best spots for watching that famous sunset...but this review must be more about the food since after all, Hot Tin Roof IS a restaurant and it certainly does NOT disappoint in any way. Fortunately all 5 of us are the sort of diners who love to taste everything on everyone else's plate and since everyone was OK with that, we took full advantage of the opportunity to order as many different things as possible! We hoped that our last night in Key West would live up to all the previous nights and it did! it's been several months now and I still think back to that beautiful evening, the perfect sunset and all that fresh air, not to mention getting to eat something wonderful off of every plate on the table. Ha! Now, Hot Tin Roof is an upscale restaurant but not so much that you can't let your hair down and have a little fun. We ALL had a great time and literally spent the entire evening there; in fact, we were the last ones to go and even then we had to tear ourselves away from the table and make our way into the car for the short drive home to Sugarloaf. We laughed the whole way and talked about the great week we had all enjoyed together and how much our dinner at Hot Tin Roof had not only met all our expectations for what a final meal in paradise should be, but had far exceeded them. It was all that and so much more and now it's a treasured memory shared among five very good friends who are already planning a Key West reunion and a return of course to Hot Tin Roof...that is unless it's off somewhere on the Hot Tamale Train and if that's the case, we'll just track it down and have another perfect night at what must be included on any list of the best restaurants in Key West!

We went to this restaurant for my birthday in December. There were problems from the start. First, I am HORRIBLY allergic to smoke, as is my husband. We were initially seated outside and I said "I smell smoke. I can't eat here." and they moved us indoors. However, they had all the doors open and they were allowing smoking on their deck in a dining area, outside the main entrance to the restaurant, providing tables and ash trays to the people seated there. The service was good (except for the fact that our complaints about smoke went unheeded). The food was good. But by the middle of the meal, I was beginning to get horribly sick and couldn't breathe. By the time we left, both my husband and myself were sick. It then progressed into a major allergy attack for both of us, and we were sick for three weeks, requiring doctors visits and meds. Smoking is NOT allowed in Florida restaurants, and we had made it very clear to the waiter that we couldn't be near it. Yet they kept the doors open? We spent over $250 on that meal with tip. The most disappointing thing is that I immediately wrote the management THAT NIGHT via email. I copied to 3 or 4 managers. I received return receipts from them. BUT NEVER RECEIVED A SINGLE LETTER OF APOLOGY OR FOR THAT MATTER, NEVER RECEIVED A RESPONSE WHATSOEVER. It would appear that they do not care that they make people deathly ill by ignoring the law. Perhaps they think we're just another tourist, who they'd never see again. However, we are not tourists, we live here, and are addicted to fine dining. Prior to this, it had been one of our favorite places and we visited often. Now? Not only will we never go there again, we are making it a point to tell everyone we know about our experience and mainly about the restaurant's refusal to adhere to the law, and to take responsibility for their own actions.
