I took my friend from Manchester, England to Half Shell Raw Bar last February because it was Stone Crab Claw season and she had never even heard of them, much less eaten one! Quite simply this is THE place to sit down and eat fresh seafood of any kind, but when stone crab is in season, it's impossible (for me) to resist. We decided we would start with three pounds...there were three of us and 3 lbs. is a "start!" Naturally she went crazy for them-they're always so good and fresh at Half Shell...so we ordered three more pounds! It's so much FUN to sit there and eat crab with your fingers as you stare out at the marina, the blue sky and the Gulf of Mexico though to be honest we were rapt with the proper attention to the job before us...making sure we got every single morsel of crab out of those claws. Then we ordered another three pounds which seemed to make little impression on our waitress (apparently we aren't the only ones to come there and eat a LOT of crab)! We were pretty sure we could still eat more but we remembered that ole show biz saying, "Always leave 'em wanting more!" and decided to heed that advice and make our way home. Talk about making memories and just the idea alone of introducing someone to a "new food" they've never eaten before! I wish I had LOTS of friends who had never eaten stone crab before...and I certainly wish I had a Half Shell Raw Bar back home...but alas, the only stone crab we get in Northwest Florida is most always frozen beforehand, and believe me when I tell you there's no comparison. They have to be fresh and I personally think that they have to be at Half Shell Raw Bar, too! They must know where the very best stone crab live cause it always rocks my world every time I go there...and when I'm in Key West, that's a LOT. I suggest you do the same. I'm just sayin'...

when I lived in Key West thirty years ago this was one of the roughest and toughest areas right on the waterfront where the boats would come in. It's still there but now it's right in the heart of beautiful shops and yachts. Same great local seafood. My wifes favorite is the mahi mahi but I am all about the florida lobster. A great place to people watch. Best thing. I got to get a T-Shirt to replace the Half Shell T-shirt my bride threw out. Classic!

The top deck has the greatest vie of the harbor and was not crowded. The Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich is to die for and the prices are very reasonable. What a great place. Paper plates, Awesome views and food. What a great find!

Yes, all the food is good at Half Shell... and it is right in the middle of everything, and the view is great... and the drinks.... BUT you really, really have to go during Stone Crab season.. they are the best anywhere.. one time I found myself "pigging" out on the things right in front of my boss... she just laughed at me... Go to Half Shell anytime you can but PLAN to go when they have Stone Crab ... yummie!

Great place. Good service, great food. My friends and I sat out back. The atmosphere was great. The menu was incredible. I had a perfectly prepared piece of tuna. The Half Shell is just a really comfortable place to dine. The prices are reasonable and food is really good. The service was perfect. The food just seemed to appear as we laughed and talked and just chilled. Put this one on your list. You can't go wrong.
