People come to Key West to relax, but it can feel a little hustle and bustle there sometimes (yes, really) what with all the cruise ships, the buskers and the frozen cocktail machines. Hogfish is the antidote: the real old style Key West, in all it's scruffy, unpolished, derelict glory. There is nothing like this on the actual Key West island anymore, but Stock Island, the next Key north, is still undeveloped (though changing fast). Hogfish sits in the corner of a marina with sailboats, catamarans, live-aboards and a little ways away, shrimp boats and fishing boats. Stroll down the dock and peek into artist studios, woodworker shops and curious dwellings for a look at a side of Keys life few know exists anymore. Some people come here and still live off the grid! At the Hogfish, listen to a jukebox or (more than likely) live folk music. Shoot some pool. Hang out. Dig into the hugest, flakiest fish sandwich you can possibly imagine, or fish tacos or all the shrimp you can stand. A short drive and many years into the past. Very worth it, and you will treasure it like your own little secret.

On our first visit to Key West in Sept. 2004, we asked the bartender at Shula's to recommend some places that were REALLY local. Living in a tourist town ourselves, we knew that was the best way to find them. He recommended Hogfish. It's not easy to find, and the scenery on your way there may put you off a bit, but don't turn around if you're looking locals and wonderful food. We returned on our second visit this May, and it will always be one of the places we visit in Key West.
