The King or Queen is selected by a secret committee and announced only weeks before the parade, and is always a rescued/adopted dog. Much like royalty, once selected, his or her Majesty begins a whirlwind of costume fittings, grooming, parties, media interviews, photo shoots, etc.
Every year, the Krewe of Arfeous donates a portion of the proceeds from registration fees, merchandise sales, etc. to worthy animal welfare groups. These groups must be non-profit organizations actively involved in animal welfare. Proceeds from previous years benefited C.A.R.E.
