Doing Duval Street

Key West, FL -

Duval Street in Key West is to the island what Bourbon Street is to New Orleans, what "the Strip" is to Las Vegas... much more than simply a "street," it's a way of life!

Key West, Florida

Everything you picture about Key West, every quirk and unique tick that you associate with the city, is represented somewhere along Duval Street. Running generally north by south, tilting a bit to the east, Duval is anchored at its northern end by world-famous Mallory Square and at it's southeastern end by the Southernmost point... which isn't exactly on Duval, but then, this wouldn't be Key West without a few contradictions!

If you're so inclined, you can travel from one end of Duval to the other hitting a different bar every few feet.

Duval is in the heart of Old Town, the old section of Key West that is most intimately associated with legendary figures from the island's past - Ernest Hemingway, Cuban cigar-makers, infamous wreckers, and a host of literary luminaries.

Today Duval Street is most famous for something the locals call the "Duval Crawl." You see, if you're so inclined, you can travel from one end of Duval to the other hitting a different bar every few feet.

Try this for a few hours, and you'll understand why the word "crawl" was added! And you'll have the opportunity to watch - and be a part of - one of the world's great people parades.

"You see something crazy on Duval every day!" Tracy Cox, Office Manager of Hog's Breath Saloon told us. "Hog's Breath is popular because it's a locals and tourist place, half of both, and that's the best part of being near Duval."

That's one of the charms of this street... the locals haven't abandoned it. You'll meet them on the street, and in the shops, restaurants and bars along the way.

And speaking of the Duval Crawl and bars... Duval Street boasts bars with a world-wide reputation. Capt. Tony's, on Green just off Duval, is the original Sloppy Joe's... which now sits at 201 Duval. Sloppy Joe's was made famous by Hemingway, of course, and the connection continues to draw visitors today.

Hog's Breath Saloon, at 400 Front Street just off Duval, is one of the island's most popular bars, and their fresh, local seafood is a hit with both locals and visitors. Their motto - "Hog's Breath is better than no breath at all" - pretty much sums up the attitude you'll find in this bar...

The Bull & Whistle, 224 Duval, is a Key West original. Downstairs offers live music, while the top floor has a clothing optional bar... for the adventurous! This is, naturally enough, one of the premier people watching spots on Duval!

This might be a good time to note that addresses on Duval start at the north end with the 100 block, and move forward as you move south.

Over the years Duval has developed a vibrant art scene, with galleries up and down the street. Anchored to the north by internationally known Wyland Studios, and at the south by the Alan S. Maltz Gallery, Duval boasts an eclectic collection of artists and art galleries.

Too often in vacation destinations, when tourists begin to take notice of a particular part of town, it quickly loses favor with the locals. To a great extent Duval Street, like Bourbon in New Orleans, hasn't fallen victim to this trend.

Which isn't to say you can't find souvenirs, t-shirts, and the usual "must-have" vacation reminders. There are several businesses along Duval that can accommodate your souvenir needs quite nicely. Try the Conch Republic Trading Company or the T-Shirt Factory, both on Duval.

Duval Street is quintessential Key West. It'll supply many of the mental images you'll bring home with you from America's Caribbean paradise... and most of the gifts and souvenirs too! End of Article
