Paws For A Cause
Key West, FL -A Parade of Pooches will Proudly Pound the Pavement on a 4.6 mile course to raise funds benefiting the Domestic Abuse Shelter, which provides safe haven and counseling for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. The Canines and their Cohorts will Careen across the historic bridge at a leisurely pace in order to enjoy the glistening waters of Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean below…and to raise much needed funds for the Shelter!

The “old bridge” was originally a portion of the roadbed for the railroad that connected the Florida Keys with each other and the mainland from 1912 to 1935…unfortunately, passage to Key West soon became impossible after the infamous hurricane of 1935! Today the old bridge is simply used for fishing and locals and tourists alike enjoy Pigeon Key at the bridge’s halfway point. Both Pigeon Key and the Old Seven Mile Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and most of the historic buildings on the Key have been restored. There's also a railroad museum that features artifacts, photographs and other material related to the building of the bridge and the railroad for everyone to enjoy.
Each determined pair collects pledges rom area businesses and private donors, and the walker who collects the most money will receive a two-night stay at the Curry Mansion in Key West. Small dogs are allowed to stay at the mansion with their owners, but larger pets must be boarded at the Florida Keys Animal Hospital in Marathon…at no charge of course!
For people who wish to walk but don’t have a pet, dogs will be provided at no charge by the Florida Keys Animal Shelter's Adopt-a-Dog program. No one who wants a pet as a partner will be denied and that’s no barking matter!
