Truman Legacy Symposium
Key West, FL -From 1946 to 1952, former president Harry S. Truman spent 11 working vacations at a 10-room residence on the Key West Navy Base that became known as his Little White House. His sojourns in Key West were both relaxing and productive, allowing him to ponder policies and hold meetings away from the pressures of Washington.
"President Truman convened the first civil rights commission and drafted two executive orders requiring the desegregation of the armed forces and the federal work force," said Robert Wolz, executive director of the Harry S Truman Little White House Museum. "On Dec. 3, 1951, he drafted another executive order -- at the Little White House -- requiring that federal contractors hire minorities."
The symposium is hosted by the Little White House, Florida Atlantic University and the Truman Presidential Museum & Library/Truman Library Institute. Panels, discussions and presentations offer attendees a rare opportunity to hear speakers from the Truman era.
Now a museum showcasing the Truman era
in Key West, the Little White House has been meticulously restored to
look much as it did in Truman's day and is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. VIP tours of little White House are to follow the
presentations.
