Murrells Inlet Boat Parade

Jul 3, 2012

In June 1984, a few local citizens of Murrells Inlet met at Rosa Linda's to discuss the possibility of a July 4th boat parade. The idea was the result of these thoughts... "If Pawley's Island can have a parade, then why not Murrells Inlet?" It took only one month to plan the first parade. Only 25 boats were hoped for that first year but they ended up with over 40 participants! It seems that everyone loves a parade. Especially boaters! During the first few years, the event was family sponsored, with help from Food Chef Convenience Stores. Although no T-shirts were sold the first year, they began selling souvenir T-shirts by the 2nd year. As the parade grew in size, the Jaycees stepped in as sponsors; however, when the Jaycees eventually disbanded, the parade was again returned to the "locals." As they were looking for a new sponsor, a newly formed Boy Scout Troop, #396, of Belin United Methodist Church, was invited to "participate." Producing the parade and selling T-shirts immediately became a service project for the troop and all proceeds from the shirts were donated to the Scout Troop for any of its needs. A few years ago, the Murrells Inlet Boat Parade Committee decided to honor one of the parade's founders, Bob Hendrick, by naming the first place boats trophy, the "Bob Hendrick" trophy. It is awarded to the best-decorated boat, based on originality, patriotism and theme. Each year the parade has become bigger and better. In previous years there were over 125 boat entrants and that does not include those boats who "jumped in" just for fun! The Murrells Inlet Boat Parade Committee, Inc. hopes every year will be bigger and better; after all, it is an inexpensive and fun way for the entire family to celebrate the FOURTH OF JULY. Best spots to view the parade are Murrells Inlet Marshwalk, Capt. Dick's Marina, Belin Memorial United Methodist Church and Nance's Restaurant and Hot Fish Club. Murrells Inlet is located in Georgetown County, SC, known as the oldest family resort area in the nation. The small community is lined on the east by tidal and salt marshes and is home to centuries-old live oaks. The nationally recognized 1,400-foot Marshwalk nature trail winds over the adjacent wetlands where you can walk among the wetlands and cruise the creek. There are more than 30 restaurants in this "Seafood Capital" that serve mouth-watering delicacies prepared by award winning chefs from the bountiful seafood harvested just off the shores of Murrells Inlet. From the rich history of buried pirate treasure, to the ecology tours of the spectacular salt marsh, Murrells Inlet is a world apart with lots of FUN things to do! What better way to enjoy it all than the Murrells Inlet Boat Parade on the 4th of July...AHOY, Matey!

Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience at Brookgreen Gardens

Jun 30, 2012 - Oct 30, 2012

There is nothing more beautiful than watching a butterfly in flight. So imagine the beauty of watching hundreds of butterflies soaring through the air. Well, you can at the Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience seasonal exhibit in Brookgreen Gardens. The exhibit features a lush garden filled with tropical plants that are home to Monarch, Zebra Longwing, Polydamas Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, Julias, Buckeyes, Queens, Painted Lady, and American Lady. These are just a few of the species that call Whispering Wings home and dozens of other species will be added throughout the season. All over the world, butterflies are valued for their beauty and currently inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects. They are cold-blooded and depend on the sun to regulate their temperature. They are essential pollinators in the garden and need nectar plants for adult butterflies, host plants to provide food and camouflage for caterpillars, and plants that provide shelter from wind and predators. Whispering Wings contains a pupae emergence room where you can observe the transformation from chrysalis to adult butterflies. Interpretive signs throughout the exhibit and benches provide a restful place to watch their delicate beauty in flight. The exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 - adults and $2 - children, for a 30 minute timed visit in addition to garden admission. There are so many other wonderful events taking place at Brookgreen Gardens throughout the summer so be sure to check out their event schedule at brookgreen.org. S.O.S. Fall Migration

Sep 13, 2012 - Sep 22, 2012

The Society of Stranders calls its thousands of active members to return to North Myrtle Beach in mid-September for one last big party before winter sets in. Days and nights are filled with activities, shagging and sightseeing. Clubs around the Ocean Drive section pitch in to make sure that every evening resounds with nonstop beach music. If you've never been Shag Dancing, you've missed out on an American original... this dance craze started in Myrtle Beach over 50 years ago, and it's still going strong. Shaggers slip into their special Shaggin' shoes all year long, but the highlight of every calendar is the S.O.S. Fall Migration - a "pilgrimage" to the birthplace of Shag, Myrtle Beach. What is "Shag" you ask? It's a phenomenal dance craze that started here, in Myrtle Beach, in the 40 and 50's. Local teens invented the dance step that is most suited to Rhythm & Blues music. But "Shag" is much more than a style of swing dancing, it is a way of life for people from Virginia Beach to Florida! "Serious shaggers are in a lifestyle, which goes way beyond the dance, it's a camaraderie thing," Phil Sawyer, President Emeritus of S.O.S says. "I've been involved for over fifty years, serious for twenty-five, and I see it all the time... serious bonding between shaggers, they bond and stay bonded... shagging is far more than a dance, it's a lifestyle." If you don't think these folks take this seriously, think again. "We've had churches call wanting to know when S.O.S is having our Fall Migration, so they don't schedule revivals during that time! And we've had people call about weddings for the same reason," according to S.O.S.'s Mr. Sawyer. Shag is a 6-count, basic pattern dance with East Coast Swing. There is a rearrangement of the footwork that makes it look and feel unique. All the action occurs below the waist, though instructors tend to teach a very standard basic pattern.. True seasoned "Shaggers" take pride in adopting their own versions of the dance, each being distinctive and smooth. Using the balls of their feet and small steps, "Shaggers" manage to perform this very "cool" style of dance to individual perfection!
