Summer's Last Gasp - Labor Day & Beyond
September is summer's last gasp, and in Myrtle Beach, we do everything we can to enjoy that last little bit of paradise... which means that throughout the month there's something interesting, exciting or just down-right fun happening somewhere along the Grand Strand.

You can always count on Broadway at the Beach to offer up an exciting time for any holiday, and Labor Day is no exception! Celebrity Square is hosting Street Parties from 5pm to 8pm all Labor Day weekend, and of course participating merchants are putting their best wares out as part of the Sidewalk Sales.
"This is a really fun family event, dads come out with their sons and the neighborhood kids, and we have first, second, and third place prizes..."
-Rebecca Feagin
Combining wholesome family fun with a good cause, the 3rd Annual MDA Benefit Mini Golf Tournament tees off at 10am on Saturday, September 1st.
"This is a really fun family event, dads come out with their sons and the neighborhood kids, and we have first, second, and third place prizes in all categories," Rebecca Feagin, of Broadway at the Beach, told TripSmarter.com.
Register at the Visitors Center and compete with your friends and family for great prizes while supporting one of America's most trusted charities. Ticket prices include greens fees, lunch, and admission to Ripley's Aquarium - there's no way to lose with this one!
Strolling accordionists, simmering marinara, and the Sons of Italy. That all means one thing - it's time for the Italian Festival in Chapin Park again! Saturday, September 8th, join the crowds at Chapin Park, at 16th Avenue North & Business 17, for Italian food, music, arts and crafts.
"Cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow..." That's the unofficial motto of one of South Carolina's biggest cultural exports, the Shag. And this September 14-23rd, the Society of Stranders calls all its thousands of active members for the annual S.O.S. Fall Migration.
What is "Shag" you ask? It's a phenomenal dance craze that started here, in Myrtle Beach, in the '40s and '50s. Local teens invented the dance step that is most suited to Rhythm & Blues music. But "Shag" is much more than a style of swing dancing, it's a way of life for people from Virginia Beach to Florida....
"Serious shaggers are in a lifestyle, which goes way beyond the dance, it's a camaraderie thing," Phil Sawyer, President Emeritus of S.O.S says. "I've been involved for over fifty years, serious for twenty-five, and I see it all the time... serious bonding between shaggers, they bond and stay bonded... shagging is far more than a dance, it's a lifestyle."
If you don't think these folks take this seriously, think again.
"We've had churches call wanting to know when S.O.S is having our Fall Migration, so they don't schedule revivals during that time! And we've had people call about weddings for the same reason," according to S.O.S.'s Mr. Sawyer.
September 21-23 catch the Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival at Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet. Atalaya is a castle in the sand that was once the winter home of Archibald Huntington and acclaimed sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington.
Over 100 artisans converge on Murrells Inlet for this festival that features a wide range of creations, from baskets to beadwork. A relaxed atmosphere, live entertainment and good food ensures that this family-friendly event is always packed.
Almost everyone is familiar with the great good works done by the Shriners organization. This Saturday the 22nd, the South Atlantic Shrine Association hosts representatives from six southern states for a 4-hour parade with the Shriners' familiar wacky vehicles, clowns and entertaining floats.
If you can't find something to entertain yourself
and your family in Myrtle Beach in September, you just aren't trying!
