Geaux Saints, Geaux!

By Rachel C Vella

New Orleans, LA -

It’s that time of year football fans! The new players have been drafted, training camp is done and pre-season is over. It’s time to play football!! This year’s NFC team to watch will be the New Orleans Saints. Granted, I am a little one-sided on this… living only a few miles from the Superdome, but what an exciting year the New Orleans Saints have in front of them!

Louisianna Superdome

September 6 kicked off the beginning of the Saints season - the first game of the year for the entire league. The Saints played Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts. What a game opener! It was an emotional game with the Saints facing off against hometown hero, Payton Manning. The 41-10 final score was certainly not what we New Orleans fans wanted to see, but there were plenty of bright spots in the game, and… in characteristic fashion, everyone in New Orleans is optimistic about the season! Go Saints, Go!… local translation … Geaux Saints, Geaux!

Last year’s success was unprecedented year for New Orleans, and they hope to surpass it this year - going all the way to the Super Bowl

Last year’s success was unprecedented year for New Orleans, and they hope to surpass it this year - going all the way to the Super Bowl. Coach Sean Payton and his all-star line up with Drew Brees as Quarterback and Reggie Bush as star Running Back make for a tough offense. Deuce McAllister has also played a big part on the New Orleans offense in past years. Who will ever forget his famous touchdown run where the entire Philadelphia Defense could not bring him down!? We are looking forward to some big performances from him this year.

Other local favorites on the team are Devery Henderson at wide receiver (a graduate from Louisiana State), and two-time Pro Bowler Will Smith who looks to pad his sack total for a record-breaking year. A player to watch is Terrance Copper. I think if he can hold on to the ball he will make some amazing plays. Of course, we love all of our Saint players, but the leadership of Coach Sean Payton is what has made the difference in this team.

Big games not to miss are the Saints versus Atlanta Falcons, always a great rivalry. And vengeance will be the Saints’ on the final game of the regular season against the Chicago Bears. This game could make or break either team’s playoff hopes with the post season right around the corner.

So grab a beer, get your friends together and start up the grill, it’s football time and this year will be a great one. My prediction for the Superbowl - The New Orleans Saints versus the New England Patriots- oh, and please what ever you do, don’t tell my husband I said that, he’s a Denver Bronco fan!
