Put’n on the Ritz!

By Janis Gallo

New Orleans, LA -

I’ve heard it said that patrons of The Ritz-Carlton are loyalists. If you’re curious to find out why, you cannot pick a better time then now to experience The Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans. I vividly recall the first time I saw the Maison Blanche Building and The Kress Building in the late 80’s, wondering what would become of these architectural landmarks. Then in October 2000, following a $250 million dollar restoration effort, The Ritz –Carlton made its debut preserving the brilliant glazed terra cotta exterior, prismatic glass and the turn of the century design elements gracing the facades. With a post Katrina renovation complete, this second transformation was so inviting I new it was time to amble inside and stay awhile.

Ritz-Carlton Courtyard

The interior appointments of this property exude the sensibility of antebellum mansions lining the streets of the Garden District. What is even more alluring about my stay was the lack of pretense combined with the southern grace of everything from the décor, to the service and the light drenched courtyard. You can don your jeans or sequins. It all works.

The Ritz-Carlton ‘kicked it up a notch’ (no pun intended) when it reopened recently with a fully renovated and enhanced 25,000 sq ft. spa and fitness center. It has no rival in the city. I recommend you plan a full day at the spa, pausing between services to indulge yourself in the relaxation lounge. The only challenge you’ll face is choosing between New Age Massage techniques, a four-hand massage or no hands-off healing massage.

Cuisine and music define the New Orleans experience. The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans keeps that sensibility very much alive with four choices of restaurants and lounges. Jeremy Davenport is performing weekly and ‘swoons the room’ with his jazz trumpet and clear seductive voice. Get there soon to enjoy the ‘blues queen of New Orleans’ Marva Wright as she works her magic. If you are lucky enough to hear her sing “Walking Around Heaven All Day” you can either consider your self blessed or having had indulged in your own sumptuous slice of heaven.
