Key West is SO Alive…and Well
Key West, FL -
Wow! Fun and fabulous, not to mention delicious, “Taste
of Key West” is always on everyone’s “to do” list
and this year was no exception. All my favorite restaurants participated
in this huge fundraiser for AIDS Help and no one in their right
mind should ever miss the astounding array of wine and food served
along the beautiful waterfront in Truman Annex. Apparently, no
one did, as the whole town showed up for the event-it was great
seeing neighbors greeting neighbors and being greeted myself by
very cute kids and more than a handful of even cuter dogs…well,
I’m a dog lover and everyone knows it! It was truly paradise
with the sun glinting off the ocean and the incredible smell of
wonderful things cooking everywhere. Everywhere I looked, people
were precariously balancing a glass of wine and a full-plate of
food...ready to perch and EAT and enjoy! It’s been a while
since I’ve seen everyone so happy and content surrounded
by the golden glow of sunset and the bright turquoise water of
the Gulf…Ahhh, there really is nothing like Key West and
we that live here never take it for granted!
Spring has completely sprung in Key West
and we are heading into summer. The leaves have finally all returned
to the trees after the wrath of “Wilma” and even
the frangipani are about to bloom as if nothing ever happened.
If you’ve never walked past a frangipani tree in full bloom,
you just haven’t lived-the scent is pure and clean like
the very best perfume! It seems there’s no visible sign
a hurricane ever graced our shores…and thank goodness for
that! We’ve got our fingers crossed for this season and
everyone is lighting candles at the Grotto-that’s another
story for next time. The near shore waters are getting nice and
warm and our summer boating season is about to begin. That’s
the time of year when the waters around Key West are nearly calm,
making boating and snorkeling conditions about as perfect as
they can be.
The theater season is winding down with The
Rocky Horror Show at The Red Barn. Believe it or not, it’s
been 30 years since Rocky Horror opened on Broadway and it’s
never made its way here…even though we certainly have the
odd cast of characters needed for any production of Rocky! It should
be great at the Red barn with its intimate seating-it just begs
for you to yell out and “do the time warp again!” The
Waterfront will almost bring things to a close with Tennessee William’s,
The Glass Menagerie. Everyone loves a little “Tennessee” in
this town! Then our own Tom Luna will finally bring things to a
close with the greatest show on earth, “Fully Loaded.” At
least HE says it’s the greatest show on earth and I’m
looking forward to seeing Tom, Danny Weathers and Anthony T. chew
more than a little scenery at The Waterfront in early June.
Years ago, the Conch Republic seceded from
the Union…just one of those quirky kind of things that Key
Westers love to get up to and we’re celebrate that freedom
every year! The Conch Republic days are just getting underway with
fanciful events like bed races down main street…pushed by
drag queens and such (you figure that out)! And what celebration
would be worth its “salt” without a Pirates Ball with
a Pig Roast! But none of that can take place until the famous Battle
at Sea is enacted once again for the umpteenth time! I never cease
to be amazed by the mock battle in the harbor against, or with
the coastguard, I’m not sure. Anyway, the weapons are tomatoes
and water guns so it’s all in good fun (unless you get a
tomato in the face). Well, as you can see, the wacky and fun Key
West is alive and well. You should come join us…now!
