Pensacola Civic Band
Pensacola, FL -Remeber the days when men wore boaters...and women paraded around in hoop skirts with their young boys by their side in knickers buckled below the knee? The whole family would gather around the gazebo in the park in anticipation of a summertime concert by "The March King's" band. Those were the days...The Pensacola Civic Band hopes to raise the spirits of everyone in the area who suffered the wrath of Ivan as it transports its audience back to those popular concerts of the early 20th century with music by and inspired by John Phillip Sousa, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the Saenger Theatre, downtown Pensacola.

The concert music is a tribute to Sousa on the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1854. Sousa wrote perhaps hundreds of marches and other musical numbers, but it was his band that remained the most popular musical act in the world for over 30 years. Known best as "Sousa's Band," they were the first American musical organization to go on world tour, the first musical act to travel more than a million miles and the first to perform for more than a million people. Concert-goers will be treated to many of Sousa's best-loved pieces such as "The Washington Post," and will also hear pieces that may not be as familiar, but have the unmistakable Sousa imprint, such as "Solid Men to the Front," "The Black Horse Troop," and "The Royal Welch Fusiliers." Audience members will also enjoy other music of the early 20th century such as Henry Fillmore's "Light Cavalry" and a medley of "Hits of the 20's" which includes "Am I Blue?," "Ain't She Sweet," "Limehouse Blues," and the "Charleston."
In keeping with the tradition of the Sousa Band, the Pensacola Civic Band is pleased to feature some of its outstanding soloists. Ron Smith on bass trombone is head of the music department at Pensacola Christian College. Matt Fossa is the principle oboist with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and teaches music appreciation and oboe at Pensacola Junior College. Rosemary Ramsey Pearce, vocal soloist, is Choral Director at Robertsdale (AL) High School and plays piccolo, flute and piano with the Civic Band.
