The Crescent on Canal is fairly centrally located.
You can walk to the Superdome from there, but definately take a cab to and from the French Quarter at night. Daytime, you're fine, but stay on Canal St and don't venture away from the busy areas. Your hotel is nice, but the neighborhood between it and the French Quarter isn't a tourist area.
