hotels and transit

I am planning a trip to Atlanta mid-Nov. for an event at Phillips Arena. What is this area of town like? It appears to be close to the downtown area. Where to stay? and tell me about Marta routes that would be near hotels if I stay further away from the arena? I would like for the hotel to be economical but safe. I don't really care about spas and pools - but an on site restaurant would be good. B&B's are also an option.Thank you very much for your help.

Welcome to the forums mac!

I'm more familiar with Midtown, but I'll see if our AE in Atlanta can answer some of your questions about Downtown.

Here are the Marta Rail Maps and Schedules, if that helps.

Phillips Arena is smack downtown, adjacent to CNN Center and the Omni Hotel, which is pricey. There's a Super8 which isn't a bad place to stay for economy. The Westin is obv. nice. Have no experience with other hotels.

Be aware there is close to nothing to do downtown after dark. There are a few dining options inside CNN Center, but everything inside the Omni is tourist priced.

Underground Atlanta added some bars and such over the past year or so. You can safely walk or ride the train there from Phillips, if you feel compelled.

How are you getting to Atlanta, and from where?
