Lightbulb Will I die

I have been hearing about people getting killed by riptides in Destin recently, the funny thing is none of these tourist sites are mentioning it. 8 people have died recently, is this a normal thing in Destin and the surrounding area? Also, I have been reading up on jellyfish, I have never been to an ocean. I have been stuck in the Midwest all my life. Are jellyfish stings very common in mid July, what about sharks. This stuff is all new to me, so pardon the stupidity. Thanks

I think there were 9 people that drowned over two weekends in two counties (Okaloosa & Walton) because of dangerous riptides.

Unfortunately, the swimmers were either unaware of, or chose to ignore the Flag Warning System that has been in place for years.

All of the drownings took place on Red Flag days (Red Flag = STAY OUT OF WATER!). The local authorities do what they can to inform people of dangerous conditions, including posting flags/flag warning system at all public accesses, and driving down the beach with a bullhorn telling people to get out of the water.

However, most toursits come to the beach to swim, and many choose to ignore the warnings... which can prove to be a fatal mistake.

Check out our section on Swimmer's Tips to find out more about the Flag Warning System and what to do if you get caught in a riptide.

I think jellyfish season is in the fall - but, even then, it's not bad. I've been swimming in the Gulf all my life and have only been stung 2 or 3 times. Similar to a bee sting.

Sharks are really not a threat. You've got more of a chance of being struck by lightning.

Thanks, it figures that it is lack of common sense that killed those unlucky people. I was not aware of the Red Flags that were out. You have given me confidence to get in that damn water. Thanks again.
