Rob's Review of Destin Commons 3 out of 5 stars!
This is my Opinion of the newly devloped Destin Commons
Pro's 1)new stores 2)JOBS 3)a decent movie theater CONS 1)Overpriced stores 2)restraunts that "pride themselves" in their food presentations (and you get very little of it too so if your not hungry and have thick wallets go there) 3)more traffic then we need on the ONLY highway that takes us from here to there My review of this place is simple It's a good place to hang out but buyer beware especially if you don't have that much money to spend. The rave theaters get 5 stars out of 5 I enjoyed the stadium seatings throughout each multiplex. Definatly enjoyed watching Star Wars III there. Some of the restraunts include: Hard Rock Cafe (which didn't turn me on but their food is ok) Tonys Restrante (need to try that next) Starbucks (wonder if they have WIFI) and a few others. Some of these restraunts are classified as "fine dining" so unless you got big bucks to spend steer clear from them.Ask to see their menus before entering. (note fine dining means overpriced food and you get very little of it) Their stores range from the average clothing stores electronic and fishing (Bass Pro Shops) Some are local others are world famous some I never heard of. Never been to them so I can't put my input here. Anyhow as my finances get better I'll check them out and report back here. This is my review anyone else that's been here please add your input Have fun Rob |

Destin Commons
As a local resident here is some added info on the Commons
I agree with the poster on Rave. Our number 1 reason for going to the Commons. Panera Bread is the fave eatery of choice with WIFI and good eats Tony's is good and a nice place to meet prior to movies. Bogwalk is great for the expensive meal and a nice bar. Hard Rock, well, is Hard Rock. Pricey burger joint. Johnny Rockets is a great pre movie spot also. Fave store is Maui Nix. Have not really shopped too many others. Candymaker is a fun stop for candy they make. Not enough parking and can get too crowded but I guess that is what they want. |

Commons: Common problemis not enough parking
You are correct Ted...there is not enough parking BUT I did not know about the towing going on if it is. If there is no parking left in the lots I just leave usually since it is too crowded anyway. They will also build the new expansion in the EXISTING parking and have stated they will go underground with the garage. That should be interesting BUT it has never stopped a developer before here as you can see.
Another thing is safety of pedestrians and it has been asked many times by me and others why the developers do not provide for foot traffic to and from the location like underground walkways or over the highway walkovers. Only answer I got is that it does not make them money so they are not interested. We will see how it all plays out but rest assured that traffic in the area will soon be gridlocked permanently. |

I get The Log home subscription (paper version sent to my house) and there was a huge letter to the editor from a tourist who had their car towed. Because of lack of parking, it sounded like many (he wasn't alone) were parking on the grass medians or other grass areas in the parking area.
I wish I still had a copy of the archives from about five years ago. Destin was trying to decide what to do with the harbour area. I wrote a letter to the editor that was published in The Log. It suggested a high rise hotel with parking underground beneath it, shops on street level and along the harbor, and suggested that a certain "Legendary" developer take the idea and run with it. I'm not kidding. In fact, even if it costs a few bucks, I'm thinking of seeing if The Log has archives where I can get a copy. Back then, the entire paper was free online. But they have deleted all those since. At the time I wrote that, there was literally no talk of anything resembling Harbor Walk. I think Peter Bos owes me a couple of beers, LOL. |
