I went there August 4-11th. Only 2 weeks after Hurricane Dennis. The Pelican Beach Resort only suffered minor damage. Such as the tanning deck was destroyed. And the hot tub suffered some damage and was out. As far as the beach, it was still wonderful. The first 2 and half days of our vacation was a total washout. They had a low pressure system sitting right off of Destin. And it rained, rained, rained. So much that Destin was flooded. We had little to do but sit in the condo and watch TV the first 2 and half days. But, the TVs run on satellite, so the rain kept knocking out the signal. So the only other options left were eating and sleeping.
Pelican Beach Resort is a wonderful place to stay. I am glad I chose to stay there. But, don't rent through their website, it is more expensive. Go through Abbot Resorts. It is a lot cheaper. We paid $1200 for the week and on the website it was $1700. We only booked a 1-bedroom because it was only going to be 3 people. But, it can sleep 6. The bed in the bedroom is huge. There is a queen sleeper sofa in the living room. And bunk beds in the hall for the kids. What I loved about the condo the most- 2 full bathrooms! No fighting over the bathroom especially when it is time to shower. Plus another good thing about Pelican Beach Resort is that they let me pick what floor I wanted to be on. But, make sure you make the reservations in advance because they fill up fast in the summer. We booked in March and did not go until August. We requested the first floor and we got a corner unit. It was so perfect. No hassle of stairs or elevators when you want to go out to the beach or the pool. And we had the most perfect view of the beach and the gorgeous gulf.
Ammenities- the beach side pool is huge and has nice cascading waterfall. You never get too overcrowded because it is so big. But, you may want to reserve a seat early. Because after 10 a.m. every single chair has a towel over it and you have no where to sit. They also had a nice indoor/swim to outdoor pool. But, hardly anyone was ever in it. I tried it but the water was too cold. The hot tub was out when we went because of Dennis. But, we walked over to the Pelican Terrace and used their hot tub. You have full use of their amenities there too. Pelican Beach also has a gym. Small, but okay for basic workout needs.
It also has a great deli on site, so you don't even have to leave for lunch. The only downside is that it closes too early around 6 p.m. Most people are just getting out the pool then. Really good pizza and excellent fries. Even have some options for people who want to eat healthy.
Pelican Beach is also in a perfect location. Right on the beach with no roads to cross. And it right across from Big Kahunas waterpark and right in the center of Destin. Everything is just a very short drive or stroll away. The only reason you probably won't be able to walk to things is because the traffic near the resort is extremly heavy in the summer.
