Seaside Status Inquiry

We were scheduled to make our annual pilgrimage to Seaside the Sunday Dennis struck and were lucky to get a refund. We are considering returning on Oct. 1 for a week but want some report on the status of the beach. I have heard varying reports as to whether the sugar sand is still there and whether there are smelly ugly earth sections between the sand and the land. I have also heard of water clarity and seaweed issues. Can anyone provide first hand impressions?
