Beach Restoration Project Permit Reinstated

(Destin, FL) -- Today, the City of Destin and Walton County received a letter from the Jacksonville District of the US Army Corp of Engineers notifying city and county officials that dredging has been authorized to resume at the projects sites of Destin/Walton County and the Navarre site.
The beach restoration project that is restoring a total of seven miles of beaches in the City of Destin and Walton County was suspended on May 23rd due to four turtle “takes” by this project.
The City of Destin’s Grants and Projects Manager Lindey Chabot says,” There have been numerous discussions with the contracted dredging company since the project was suspended to resume the project after October 1, the date first imposed by the Corps. Even though the project can now resume at any time, Great Lakes’ availability to return and complete the project is still undetermined. City of Destin and Walton County staff will meet next week to discuss the appropriate next steps.”
While the recent news was unexpected, the US Army Corp of Engineers closely monitored the status of all hopper dredging projects in the Gulf of Mexico over the last three months and became increasingly confident that hopper dredging could be resumed without jeopardizing the current sea turtle take allotment. These terms and conditions of the DA permit(s) and GRBO must be are strictly adhered to in order for the project to proceed.
The project is a joint effort between Walton County and the City of Destin to repair critically eroded beaches due to successive storms.

Stop Construction

Ya'll know if they would STOP the concrete influx that maybe, just maybe our beaches might have a better chance -- and let us NOT forget - Mother Nature will win EVERYTIME....why do we think that she won't???

Beach renourishment is man getting in the way of Mother Earth - I say let her do what she wants and needs to do to sustain herself - and we can adjust to THAT!!!

But NO! We want what we want when we want it!

Oh if only the days of Destin with two lanes and no red lights would come again -- heavy sigh
