Last trip for us there for at least a year due to the latest trip there for mediocre food, terrible atmosphere with nothing done about it, fair service and a HIGH tab at the end of it all.
Asked for an intimate table for my wife and I away from all the young families with screaming and loud kids.(Our children are grown) and we were put upstairs off the main dining room in a corner table. Sounds great right? Wrong. The ONLY other table near us in the room was a table of 8 ladies.......who got drunk, obnoxious, louder than a 747, performed strip tease dances and made it UNBEARABLE for me to even hear my wife at our own table. The more time went on the louder and more noisy they got. Three other couples were seated in this room during our meal and one of them left due to these ladies........No one ever tried to quiet them down and only one person even said sorry or anything when it was obvious they were ruining others enjoyment. Add to that, mediocre at best food, only fair service and a $130 tab for it all and you get not going back for a while. Prices are way too high here. My calamari was obviously not fresh and was no better than what I buy at Publix in the frozen food case. Lobster Bisque(a "cup"), although tasty was cold and for $7 you get about 4 oz max with a piece of lobster the size of a pea. Asked the waitress about a buttery chard for my wife and she could not recommend one. I then asked to her to check with the wine department and get us a buttery chard for under $40 and there were 8-10 to choose from. She came back and said that none of those had the quality we looked for BUT a $49 bottle did. So we upped the ante to try it and it did not have what were looking for but was good enough so we drank it. The disturbance of these ladies should have resulted in management doing something as they knew it was going on and still looked the other way. My wife had grouper trinidad which was ok but for the price was not fresh and comes with nothing. Waitress kept forgetting things and we had to ask for bread half way in. I let you know when it is great and when it is not so great. Put is this way, I wish we had gone to the quiet and relaxed Sushi Rocks and put up with medium quality wines. On my 1-10 shell rating, Poppy's gets a 4 this trip. A free dessert or cup of coffee for enduring the loud ladies club would raise it to a 6. And for $130 bucks for two when one did not even order an entree, this is inexcusable. See you in late 2007 Poppy's, MAYBE.

Thanks! We like to eat out a lot and enjoy finding restaurants with great service and great food.
Everything at Boon Docks is good, but if you like scallops, you gotta try their bay scallops. Fried or grilled (my fave), they'll leave you wanting more! Not sure what their winter hours are, so be sure and call ahead to make sure they'll be open... Good luck! |

Good Grub
That is good to know. Do you know of anyplace closer to where I live? I have lived here for MANY years and have tried many places to eat, but not all of them. My wife and I love to eat different kinds of food. We are in the "Destin Area". I have been thinking of trying that Brazillian steakhouse in Panama City. Is that any good? Have been to several of them from Dallas to Boston, just not there.
Thanks, Micah |
