We tried the new Sushi Siam that took the old Bogwalk digs in Destin Commons and we were really impressed with the place.
Atmospehre is classy but not too pretentious, service was solid and the menu a varied and welcome plethora of Asian fare. In fact, I got so tired of looking at all they had to offer I had my wife order for us both. A good thing since there is so much to choose from.
I had a Sapporo Light beer but there are many to choose from and also four I think on draft including Bass.
Our food order this evening consisted of:
Fresh Sring Rolls
Tom Kha Gai soup
Sunomono salad
Sushi variety platter
The spring rolls came already cut into bite size sushi roll type pieces with some hoisin sauce dribbled on the plate and the peanut sauce in a small cup. The only negative for the meal was the peanut sauce which tasted like nothing but a gooey substance. On my salad as well as with the spring rolls. They need to do better on this item. We added vietnamese chili sauce and soy sauce to both of these to get them up to speed. A good portion of the rolls for $7.
My sunomono was tasty and had all the right ingredients along with seaweed, cukes and the vinegar dressing. Some crab, octopus and shrimp were the seafood items.
My wifes coconut chicken soup was the best buy of the evening and this comfort food delivered and for only $4.
The sushi variety had tuna roll, California roll and six different fish pieces of sushi. Presented nicely on a long oblong shaped tray and fresh. Came with a tossed salad as well and the salad was great, the dressing needsa some work as stated before.
Service was steady, understated and professional, as it should be in this type eatery.
Nice music playing, jazzy and Sade type and the atmosphere added to the evening meal quite nicely. I would call it contemporary Asian.
This is the meal we wanted last night but chose the Baytowne Poppy's instead, much to our dismay.
Sushi Siam is a welcome addition to the Destin scene and should do well. They also serve lunch and I am looking forward to trying it as well.
Happy Hour is 4-7 and includes $1 sushi which we missed this trip by a few minutes. Rest assured we will hit them up for this and update our review after we try it for lunch and Happy Hour.
Desserts looked good BUT we were too full for it this trip. Banana pudding w/vanilla sauce caught my eye although our server said Tempura Ice Cream was a fave.
On my 1-10 Shell rating system I am giving Sushi Siam a strong 8.25 for our first visit.
Try it, I think you will like it.
