Memorial Day

My wife and I are planning to visit Key West during Memorial Day. We have never been before, but have heard it is a great place to go. Are there any kind of special events that typically happen on or near Memorial Day? How are the crowds? I noticed that most of the hotels consider that weekend the beginning of the "off" season.
