IS KW the place for a decadent getaway?

My bride (of 20 years) and I are looking for a getaway where we can remember what it was like to be a couple instead of parents for a while. We're debating between Jamaica and Key West for a 5 day getaway. Ideally we're looking to barhop, kill a few more brain cells and lounge on the beach. She'd like to try out the new string bikini which is a no-brainer in Jamaica but would she be comfortable at the pool of an adults-only hotel or on the beach? Thanks.

Hi, I live here in Key West and I would say that you would be a lot happier in Jamaica. Key West is nice for bar hopping, but there really isnt a lot of nice beaches here. There are things to see and do if you are interested in history. There are also snorkeling trips, jet ski rentals, etc. But the key word in your question was decadent and I dont think you will get that from key west. I havent been to Jamaica but I do live here in Key West and I dont think it is the vacation getaway that people expect it to be. Hope this helps!!!

Most of the negative comments about Key West are from the large Homosexual population that lives in Key West who want to keep the island to themselves. I lived in KW for six years and it is every bit a vacation spot as Jamacia. Most of the folks who talk KW down and say there are too many tourists were once tourists themselves and because they live there, they refer to themselves as "honorary Conchs, Freshwater Conchs or plain old Conchs".

You and your wife will love KW.

Jam or KeyWest

Hi,

I saw your post and I felt I had to reply. I lived in Key West for 6 years while in the Coast Guard from 92 - 97. I thought it was great. It sounds just like the place your looking for. Its all about bar hopping and there is a very relaxed sexual atmosphere. If your looking for a place where your girl and be relaxed in a "adult" atmosphere than make sure you go to "atlantic shores" by the pool. You can sit your new slinky outfit or even go in the buff if you like.

I admit however the beaches kind of do suck down there. However you can find plenty to do besides sitting on the beach... I would consider key west if I were you.

I've been going to the Keys for about 30+ years and never get bored with it. I lived there for periods of time and find myself wanting to go back as often as i can get away. The hotels will offer you anything you want.... depending on how much you want to pay. We went for a week in March and stayed in Marathon and partied a few days in Key West. Next month.... the deals are so hot, we're going to go for a 4 day/3 night stay in Key West at a cute B & B (www.authors.com)..... and we go because we always have a great time (we are a straight couple). We have also already booked our 16 day trip during the winter holidays.... because its one of the best vacations/experiences you can have. Talk about the place in public places and see how some ears perk up and smiles surround some great stories other people have enjoyed. The Garden of Eden above The Bull & Whistle offers nude sunbathing on the rooftop (3rd floor).... very freeing... and the island offers clothing optional hotels... very nice places. It's a perfect 5 day trip! Enjoy.... i promise you'll love it.

lived in KW and just got back from Ocho Rios

I lived in Key West most of my life and you will have a blast there and you can let your hair down as nobody really cares, very liberal. What I would say is that don't go expecting a great beach unless you go to Fort Zachery Taylor, which is a state park. The main beach, Smathers, is a great beach for getting some sun but the water is too shallow to really enjoy. I always felt bad for the tourists that came to KW for the beach. In fact I am going to KW this weekend for some adult fun! Just got back from Ohco Rios. As long as you stay on your hotel property, it is fine but the begging from the locals was pathetic. The country is very sad and poor. The beach wasn't that great either, very shallow although we went out on a boat to the reef but for the beach it wasn't all that. If you are looking for the beach, try Cancun, BEAUTIFUL. Hope this helps!

Question key west ideas - kim what are u talking about

I'll be visiting Key West for the this summer...Any ideas on the best spots to visit for a fun romantic getaway??

P.S. Jamaica is not a SAD and POOR country. Obviously you spent time in the "tourist" spots and lower income "PORTIONS" of the country. There are many classes of living and people living on the island country. Key West and many other locales in the US have their fair share of BEGGING LOCALS, correct?
;)

Where are the best hotels in the keywest area, any recommendations? Also how far away is Marathon from Keywest? Lived in St Johns for awhile and i know how booring it can get after awhile. Just wondering if Key West was any different. What is the main attraction anyway? Any info would be greatly appreciated

To gregluden,
There is only ONE place to stay in Key West, The Eden House try it you will not be disapointed. They treat you like family very laid back. Check out there web site, if you go tell Mike I said "Hi"
