Do I need a car in Key West

We've only been to Key West once, for a few hours on a short cruise ship stop.

Now, we're planning on staying there for four days at a downtown hotel. This is at the end of a Florida road trip from Panama City with stops visiting different relatives so we'll have a rental car.

Question: Any reason to keep a rental car or should we just turn it in and take a cab to/from airport. How much is airport cab fare.

car

If you are staying in the area called Old Town you will really not need it. If you are staying in an area called New Town you will need it but you could still drop it off and rent bikes to get around. The island is only 2 by 4 miles and is flat so its easy to get around by bike.

Thumbs up Bikes are the way to go

A bike, moped, or walking is much more relaxing than a vehicle in Key West. There is a hand full of restaurants that have free parking, but a majority don’t. All of Duval Street is best on foot anyways. It all depends on what you plan to do during your four days. Almost all of Key West facilitates bike riders with a bike rack. I don’t think the use of a car is necessary; the weather is great this time of year. Keep in mind on the entire island there isn’t a speed limit above 35 mph (I could be wrong) the island is about 2 by 4 miles. There is a bus system, there are cabs, and bike/moped rentals, I don’t think you would spend the amount of a car rental on any of them. There are a few parking garages that cost 2 dollars an hour, but no meters for parking a bikes. Best of luck, enjoy the island.

No car needed

If you are staying downtown you will not need a car. You can get everything you need on foot or rent a bike!
