Haven't found anything yet, other than that it's in the old section of Key West, and Fort Zachary Taylor is located just off it. We WILL find something out though! Back to the research...

Thumbs up

Eureka! Got in touch with Jerry Wilkinson, the President of the Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys and he had this to say:

"When John Whitehead bought his part of Key West in the 1820s he had his brother, William Whitehead, do a survey. Samuel Southard was the Secretary of the Navy at the time, hence Southard St. and Eaton (forget his first name) was Secretary of the Army, hence Eaton Street. All the streets in "Old Key West" were named by William."

Thanks Mr. Wilkinson, and thanks too thelostparrothead, great question!

Always glad to help! See, now you can always tell people that you're related to "that" Southard - you know (nudge, nudge) the former Secretary of the Navy. It should keep 'em guessing...
