Does the recent trouble sinking the Spiegel Grove give anyone concerns about the Vandenberg artificial reef project coming up in Key West? Seems like the Spiegel Grove was just one of those things, and concern over it shouldn't stop Key West from going ahead with the Vandenberg. What do other think?

Some think not enough studies and planning took place and this early sinking could have been avoided. Most agree that this unfortunate situation is something to learn from so the Vanderberg doesn't experience the same problems. Keysnews.com has an article on it in todays paper.

The Spiegal Grove was a navy LSD (landing ship dock) that was to be sunk off Key Largo to become the largest vessel ever used as an artificial reef.
There were a few technical difficulties though, and the 510 ft. ship sunk a bit early, in the wrong position. Now the bow sticks above the waves, the Coast Guard is patrolling the area to keep the incautious safe, and it's going to be a bit before she's righted. Ocean Divers of Key Largo has a website about the Spiegal Grove, which explains it all in detail. |

Well, the Spiegel Grove is still in the same shape she was last week. The Coast Guard is reminding boaters in the area to keep at least 500 yards away from the ship. Good advice, given the bad luck that's hit this baby!

Baring unforeseen circumstances, it looks like the Spiegel Grove will get rolled into its proper position on Wedensday. Divers have been down to the ship to retrieve items lost during the sudden unexpected accidental incident.
Anybody heard how the Vandenberg project is coming along? |

As of reports this morning the ship is now resting on her side and on the bottom. Officials have decided to leave her this way as it is becoming way to costly to right her. It could be ready for divers as early as this weekend.

Good. My nephew is headed down there next week and plans on diving it. Said he's going to bring us pictures of the thing. Whats with the Vandenberg wreck? Will it be done? He is planning on diving that too.

Saw an article they have that just about gushes with enthusiasm for the wreck. They're reporting that wreck requires several dives just to get a good take on the thing. Expect we'll be hearing more of the same as divers get down that way. Now, wonder what's up with the Vandenberg?

Henrietta Marie shipwreck
The August issue of the National Geographic features an article on the Henrietta Marie shipwreck that sits 35 miles off Key West... Key West gets all the great press...
The Henrietta Marie was a slave ship that sank in 1700. She was found by Mel Fisher when he was hunting the Atocha. |
