For a while there was a sign on Laird about Jackson County tomatoes. I finally stopped and there were baskets of sun-ripe tomatoes and a tin of money with a plastic cap on it. One basket, two dollars, just open the tin and put your money in. There was money inside to make change, too! In this day of war and distrust it's nice to know that some people believe in the honor system, huh? Well, the tomatoes were really good, too but now they're gone! Anybody know where you can find some real garden tomatoes for sale? Once you try a real tomato for a change, you can't go back. I'd appreciate any info on some real, red, ripe tomatoes...honor system or not, I'm game! HELP, please...

Nothing grows on the BEACH!
Years ago, the beach was considered useless as nothing would grow on it...certainly NOT tomatoes! There are farms some 40 miles away but I can't remember ever seeing a roadside farm stand on the beach. Fortunately for the "beach," we eventually discovered other attributes that made the beach quite desirable in spite of not being able to grow corn or even a good watermelon. I don't have to tell anyone how much it costs to buy waterfront property, do I? Everyone wants to live by the Gulf, swim in it and spend hours just watching the surf...but still...NO tomatoes!

Fairgrounds
OK I'll take your word for it, but by Fairgrounds do you mean Frank Brown Park? As for venturing across that bridge, I try not to...but every now and then, yes. I know there are a few stands on 15th Street but they don't really carry what I consider "farm" produce and for sure not vine ripened tomatoes. Yes, everything grows on a farm, but why is it all SOOOOO bad at Winn Dixie? Publix is far better but still not what I consider garden grown. Jodimarie if you give me directions, I'll head that way on Saturday and report back to you. Thanks

Sorry Garth, but pack your bag, get your oil changed, and fuel up for that looooong journey over the bridge...
If it's fresh farm produce you want, then it's over the bridge and into to town you must go! The fabulous fairgrounds are off of 98 (15th street), about 5-6 miles (?) pass the bridge. The farmer's market will be in some sort of warehouse on your right. You should spot it when you see several pick up trucks in the parking lot loaded with watermelons, etc... Have a great trip and send me a post card!
