Any auto mechanics on here?

Wondering if there are any people that frequent this board that are knowledgeable about auto repair costs? My son and his wife are car-less as a head gasket blew on their one and only driveable car causing oil to fill up the radiator. He is in the process of getting it repaired at a cost of around $920. He has bought the parts, a head gasket kit, it has a seal leaking so he had to buy some kind of plastic gasket, plus a timing belt and four bolts that I have no idea where they go, probably something to go along with the head gasket kit maybe! One of the heads is warped which might involve having to shave it off some. Does this sound like a normal price range for all that work? I checked one very reliable place we use when needed and they quoted between $825 and $875 if they had to shave something off of the head. The car has a single cam engine. My DIL is bent out of shape that it is costing that much, her mother and father live in Clarksville, TN which is around 200 miles from here. Her mother tried to say that same work could be done there for around $300, I do not believe that. Maybe $700 and to me it isn't worth the risk of trying to drive it that far, and having it towed that far would be around $200 probably itself. I don't think it could be driven that far and shouldn't be. A big risk of breaking down on the interstate. Not to mention it is not convenient and they need it now! I am having to pick them up from work until the car is ready, which will be around Friday. Any advice would be appreciated!

have it towed

Tow it behind another vehicle, it sounds like you've got allot of work that needs to be done. I have a guy Nick at Tuffy who has never steered me wrong, call him tell him what you've got going on tell him you don't like the estimates you've been given. He will give you an estimation right then. I've taken many freinds there and no one has left unhappy. Ronnies is another credible auto mechanic out on the Beach, I've never heard anything bad about the work Ronnies does. I hope this helps you a little either way you go your in great hands with these two.
