here is the quote from Ben Franklin - i love this quote and i thought there was something missing......the word essential changes the entire impact of what he is saying (in my humble opinion) -

privacy, freedom of speech, freedom of the press... All things that some people in today's political world seem to think that we are better off without or that we are not sophisticated enough to handle... I will correct my omission...

I hardly believe freedom of press is something Ben Franklin had in mind as essential...

And no all liberties aren't essential I mean why aren't employers at liberty to pay their employees whatever they want? Why do they have to offer us Workman's comp? The government that's why. Should the employer's have liberty and freedom to do however they please no matter how unfair? If the employees don't like it they can leave.

Not that I need that protection but just food for thought.

If Benny didn't want Freedom Of The Press to be essential why would he have put it in there right alongside speech and the right to bear arms???

The press was given that freedom so that they could be basically the watch do that prevents the gov't from abusing their powers. When we start arresting people in the press we start to look like the authoritarian gov'ts we aim to vanquish around the world.
