Nacho Hippo in Myrtle Beach, SC!
There's no proven formula for making something cool. It's either cool... or it's not.
You don't know how to define it, but you definitely know it when you see it.
I don't believe in magic, but I do have to admit there is something magical going on at this little place down in Market Commons.
They call it Nacho Hippo, and it is WIDE OPEN! The minute you walk in the place, you know you have hit the jackpot. The Nacho Hippo thing sounds kinda wrong at first, but you get it when you get there.
The place is hip – and they do have the most amazing nachos, but Nacho Hippo is a lot more than that... this place is one of a kind!
And, speaking of ORIGINAL, the menu may be small but it is savvy, tasty and one-of-a-kind with a focus on flavor – like the Grilled Corn on the Cob - they jam a stick in it, roll it around in this awesome homemade crème spiked with crushed chile peppers and lime and queso fresco, then grill it and serve it hot and spicy – I have never had anything like it before.
Of course, with a name like Nacho Hippo, they've got every kind of Nacho you can think of, but they've also got their own way with Tacos and Burritos – They are made in traditional Mexican style, but they fill them with flavors from around the world – like this "Carolina Kid" taco loaded with southern style Pulled Pork. And an awesome taco they call "The Donald" that is stuffed with Maine lobster, spicy mayo, cheese, jalapeno and mango salsa. They have a “Thai One On” taco with red curry chicken toasted coconut and Thai peanut sauce, and a "Tree Hugger" filled with roasted veggies.
Nacho Hippo is located in Market Commons. As one critic called it – a Cantina Roadhouse with a dash of Caribbean – lots of Margaritas and frozen drinks and plastic flamingos and ... naturally, hippos. It is family-style by day and party party party at night. Open for lunch and dinner. Prices are reasonable and it is definitely CASUAL.
