I do know that in Panama City, the Bay County Fair Grounds have been converted to a temporary shelter for evacuees who cannot go home, but have no other place to go. The Fairgrounds are located at the corner of 15th St (HWY 98) and Sherman Ave. in Cedar Grove. It's about a 15-20 minute drive east of the Beaches and Hathaway Bridge.

Also, reports are many hotels are offering long-term rates for evacuees.

The Laguna Beach Christian Retreat, a 2,000-bed facility on Panama City Beach has opened its doors to hurricane evacuees.

The retreat, which normally caters to Christian groups and families, can handle 300 people over the Labor Day weekend and probably will be able to handle at least 500 after Monday, General Manager Dave Haas said.

There is no charge for evacuees to stay at the retreat, located at 20016 Front Beach Road.

In addition to a room and a bed, people who move into the retreat will have access to the retreat’s basketball courts, volleyball courts and swimming pool.
People who are not staying at the retreat can stop in for meals.

Also on Thursday, the Hospice of the Emerald Coast issued a news release announcing its services were available to any hospice patients who evacuated their homes due to Hurricane Katrina. The business can be reached at (850) 769-0055.

Anyone interested in donating goods or volunteering to help should call the retreat at 234-2502.

American Red Cross shelter for evacuees is at the Bay County Fairgrounds, 2230 E. 15th St. in Panama City. Evacuees should bring whatever bedding they have as well as medications, snacks, toys for children, etc.

Evacuees must bring identification showing that they reside in the areas affected by Katrina.


In addition, a Red Cross “host shelter” for Katrina evacuees is open in the DeFuniak Springs National Guard Armory on North Ninth Street in Walton County. In Washington County, the Red Cross opened a shelter at the Washington County Ag Center, 1424 Jackson Ave. (U.S. 90 West) in Chipley.

Additionally, all evacuees should be directed to the Red Cross shelter to be registered. This registration will begin the process for their recovery and serve as a central point of information as to the location of individuals.
After they register, Red Cross staff will direct evacuees to appropriate agencies for further assistance. Details: 763-6587


Housing search online: Refugees can search for free housing at www.hurricanehousing.org. The organization will directly connect evacuees with volunteer hosts and provide the housing information to the Red Cross and FEMA. The public can post free housing offers (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch).

Special condo rates:

Edgewater Beach Resort offers the displaced discounted monthly rates starting at $1,260 per month for a one-bedroom condo, and at Majestic Beach Towers starting at $946 per month for a studio — averaging between $30 and $45 per night. Nightly rates start at $79 at both properties, and the no-pet policy will be waived.

Point Washington Methodist Church Walton County (betwen Destin & Panama City Beach) is offering dinners to Katrina evacuees Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. Sept. 6th, 7th & 8th.
