D-Day Museum Exhibit

One of New Orleans newest and most visited attractions isn't on Bourbon street... it's the National D-Day Museum. Opened last June, it's now presenting its first exhibit - The D-Day Invasions in the Pacific.

The exhibition opens on December 7th, the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Museum's at 945 Magazine Street... there's more info on it here -

And don't forget... no admission charge for those in uniform!

Question D-Day Museum

I saw several interviews from the D-Day museum on December 7 - part of the 60th Anniversary of Peal Harbor story. One of the people they interviewed was the captain of the Enola Gay - the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Is this the only D-Day museum in the country? Why is it in New Orleans? I guess they have exhibits about the Pacific war, as well?

Sorry... is that too many questions?

Not too many questions at all! As far as I know, the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans is the only one in the country. It's the brainchild and dream of historian Stephen Ambrose, who nearly single-handedly re-invigorated interest in the Second World War and those who fought it.

Besides Ambrose making his home near New Orleans, the city was selected because the famous Higgins Boats were made there. These were used in amphibous landings not just on D-Day in Normandy, but throughout the war, in all theaters. That gave New Orleans a connection not only with D-Day, but with the war as a whole.

Yep, the museum has an exhibit now on the "D-Day Invasions in the Pacific" (D-Day is a generic military term for the planned day of an invasion, not just the one in Normandy) .
