State Museum Hosts Louisiana Music Revival
> > Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Egg Yolk Jubilee, Jay Chevalier and Michael Hurt > and the Haunted Hearts to perform at the Cabildo > > On Saturday, May 20, 2006, the Louisiana State Museum will bring music > history to life with live performances by Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Egg > Yolk Jubilee, Jay Chevalier and Michael Hurtt and his Haunted Hearts from > 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Cabildo on Jackson Square. > > This showcase of some of Louisiana music's legends and innovators is the > result of a partnership between the Louisiana State Museum and the Mystic > Knights of the Mau Mau, organizers of the annual Ponderosa Stomp event > (displaced to Memphis this year due to Katrina). The mission of the Knights > is to celebrate, pay tribute to and teach the cultural significance of the > unsung heroes and heroines of rock-n-roll, rhythm and blues and other forms > of American roots music while they are still alive through festivals, > special events, concerts and outreach activities. > > Festivities will begin with a performance by New Orleans carnival icon and > often-overlooked rhythm and blues singer Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, the > creator of the Mardi Gras staple tune "Carnival Time." A talented singer > from the golden age of New Orleans R&B, he will be backed by New Orleans' > eclectic brass/funk/rock ensemble, Egg Yolk Jubilee. > > Rockabilly legend Jay Chevalier will follow Johnson. Initially partnering > with Gene Vincent, Chevalier hit it big with the ballad "The Ballad of Earl > K. Long" in 1959 and then spent a year on the road with the hit going on to > create the infamous "Castro Rock." Currently living in Kenner, Jay's song > "Come Back To Louisiana" is being considered for designation as the official > state song. In addition to backing Jay, hillbilly music resurrectionists > Michael Hurtt and his Haunted Hearts will be closing out the night with > their own set of rockabilly and country music. > > This event is free to the public.
