Thumbs up Mardi Gras Updates

The Krewe of Orpheus will hold their parade on Lundi Gras, Feb. 11th... and they'll be joined by Whoopi Goldberg and a group of her friends.

This is the third year Whoopi will be a part of the Orpheus parade...

The theme of the parade is Fiendish Fanfares of Fantasy... the Krewe of Orpheus' parade is a crowd favorite, and attendence is expected to be near a million, so get out early! The parade starts at 5:30pm.

The Krewe du Vieux is holding their annual and outrageous parade on January 19th... this year's theme is "Depraved New World." And you can certainly expect that from this crowd!

The Krewe du Vieux parade is noted as one of the more adult-oriented of the lot, and probably isn't the best parade to take the kids to see. Of course, the theme says it all.

Cool

You need to check out the Krewe of Elvis parade on Tuesday the 12th! Dozens of Elvi making their way through Jackson Square -- holy ****e! It's crazy, they're crazy and they're having a party on Monday the 11th at the Mississippi River Bottom Bar. Take a look at this picture -

Here's a tip for anyone who's decided last minute to go to MG. If you can get your hands on an RV of some sort, there's actually several place to park 'em. There's a lot on the corner of Esplanade & N. Rampart that friends have said they used and nothing was broken into or stolen. Cost was about $20 a night.

Also heard of lots on St. Charles for parking RV's but I don't know anyone who's used them.

MTV wants it's Mardi Gras! The MTV First Annual Mardi Gras Bash is coming to New Orleans, and highlights will air Saturday, February 16th from 1-4pm Eastern time. And Louisiana-native Britney Spears is co-hosting!

The main stage will be located in Jackson Square, and of course MTV crews will be roaming the streets. Britney will be joined in her hosting duties by MTV's Carson Daily, while No Doubt, Mystikal and Blink 182 will provide the music. They're also planning on airing segments on Mardi Gras Makeovers, Cajun Confessions, and Undercover.

The Krewe of Endymion's parade is the absolute ****! They say its the biggest parade and about a million people line the parade route. Their parade is on the 9th, I think. The reason we're going early to see Endymion is cause George Costanza's going to be the King! All I want to know is whether Art Vandalay built any of the floats! :D

----Mystic Krewe of Barkus
On January 27, 2002 watch out for one of Mardi Gras' most unusual parades - the 1,500 or so dogs of the Mystic Krewe of Barkus! They're all in costume, some are on homemade floats, and all are tail-wagging excited to be marching through the streets.

Everything kicks off at the Louis Armstrong Park on North Rampart at 10:30 a.m. with a open-air party, complete with great music. Then, at 2 p.m. the parade takes off, winding its way through 15 blocks of the French Quarter before the Krewe lines the street below the balcony of the Good Friends Bar at 740 Dauphine Street to salute the Royal Court.

You and your Fido can sign up to join in the parade right up till the 27th. Depending on when you join, cost is between $30 and $40. Just go to their website (http://www.barkus.org/) and give 'em a call!

One of America's best pure pop bands, SmashMouth, is headlining a calvacade of singing sensations at a concert benefitting the New York City Disaster Relief Fund at the Contemporary Arts Center.

The concert, "America Rocks," takes place on February 2nd, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tickets are $250 to $375, and can be purchased through TicketMaster.

SmashMouth and entertaining don't belong in the same sentence.

Costume Contests

Think you've got the best, most original Mardi Gras costume in all of the Big Easy? Test your theory at the 38th Annual Bourbon Street Awards on Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 12, 2002). Held at the corner of Burgundy and St. Ann streets, the Awards are an outrageous display of bad taste, exhibitionism, and good fun.

After the contest, make your way to the street below the balcony at 828 Bourbon for the Krewe of Queenateenas bead throwing extravaganza... over 10,000 beads will hit the street, starting at 1:00 p.m.

Krewe Du Vieux!

And what a 'vieux' it'll be! One of the wildest Krewes in NOLA is parading through the city Saturdays at 7pm... Andrei Codrescu is their appointed King, and the theme is "Depraved New World."

The parade kicks off on Decatur street, and ends at Rampart & Canal.

Don't bring the kids to this one... it's strictly adult-oriented insanity! In other words, just what Mardi Gras is all about!
