Hi, I am coming up for a week on Sat. I hear lots of reports on a tropical storm. Could anyone in Panama City tell me what the weather is saying there? I didn't know if I should cancel or not? If anyone could tell me what the weather situation there should be like next week would be GREAT! Thanks!

It looks like the whole thing will be blown outa here by Sunday AM. Great time to check the beach for seashells after the surf settles down. That's where I'll be.
Should be great weather the rest of your vacation!

OK Everybody, here's the way the weather looks for the duration (through Sat Night):
TS Arlene is expected to make landfall (as a Tropical Storm ((max wind less than 73 mph)), NOT Hurricane) near Gulfport MS Saturday evening / night. We are in the right front quadrant relative to the storm's NNW movement. This means we are in the most volatile area for high winds blowing onshore. We can expect to see wind speeds in the 30mph range with occasional gusts into the 40s and (rare) low 50s by mid morning Saturday into Saturday night. HIGH SEAS AND TIDES---The fact that the flow is onshore will compound the problem of high seas. High tides will occur between 12:30PM and 2:00PM on Saturday. That combined with a 2ft storm surge (pressure swell) PLUS 7 to 10 foot (higher on western beaches in Walton and Okaloosa counties) waves generated by high winds will result in SEAS 9 TO 12 FEET ABOVE NORMAL SEA LEVEL. This is significant for BOTH beach front and bay front property as some docks may be submerged...all boat owners should allow for high water. I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE FUN...STAY OUT OF THE WATER!!!!! SEVERE WEATHER----- Rain showers and thunderstorms will be with us beginning in earnest Friday evening and lasting through Saturday evening. There is a possibility of severe weather in the form of gusty surface winds and tornadoes / waterspouts. While these tornadoes and waterspouts are normally much weaker than those produced in land based storms, they can still be strong enough to do significant damage. HEED ALL WARNINGS! RAINFALL / FLOODING---Rainfall totals for this episode will be 3 to 5 inches for most areas, but there will be some localized areas that will see as much as 10 inches. This is due to what is called "training". With winds out of the south there is a possibility that some areas will have cell after cell, one behind the other, moving over from south to north resulting in localized flooding. "Where?" I hear you ask... Impossible to tell at this time. Everything should start to deCrease in intensity and frequency Saturday night and we'll see the sun by late Sunday afternoon, high 86. The following week is back to normal: Mostly sunny, lows in lower 70's, highs in the upper 80's with afternoon t'storms inland each day. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Well... it hasn't been much of a storm for PCB. We've seen only the occassional round of wind gusts, a little rain and a relatively non-existant storm surge.
I think the worst has passed our area. I'm sure Pensacola, Destin and our nieghbors to the West are faring well, too... although their weather is probably a little worse than ours. All in all, Arlene's been a mild storm. Hopefully it will be the ONLY storm this year. See everyone at the Beach! |

You can actually see some people on the Beach on the Schooners Sunset Live Cam. The waves are big and the water is currently 30-40 yards further in the Beach than normal. Still relatively mild, though. There probably hasn't been much Beach erosion. Looks like there may be a little seaweed and debris washed onshore... which indicates the water may have gotten as far as the debris line (see photo)
Panama City Beach Live Cams Also, Spinnaker's Beach Cam shows a pretty good picture. Last edited by swn5363; June-11th,2005 at 07:27 PM. |
