canoeing
Wondering if there are any canoeing fanatics out there? We canoed first time last year at Econfina Creek. Had a wonderful time but I can tell you, it was like a scene out of the movie Deliverance. Rope swings hanging from several trees. Small shacks built up above the creek! But I would highly recommend it for those that like canoeing. Cost $35.00 for two people. Canoes provided of course and we and the canoe were picked up by the people that ran the place. Very enjoyable other than not many places to stop and rest. Very nice springs to go up in, about 7 of them. No sandbars whatsover though as the Blackwater River has! Plan on doing it again though.

How about kayaking? I went on an 8 mile canoe trip down the Elk River (MO) and had the time of my life, but we also capsized, LOL, so I was thinking kayaks give you more individual control over your own destiny. On the Elk there are places to stop, swim, picnic... it's really lovely. I would put that up in my list of top five favorite things I've done. Thanks for reminding me of a great memory. :)

Haven't tried kayaking even though I have heard alot of people enjoy it. My husband and I thought about going to Linden, Tennessee to canoe at the Flatwoods Canoe base. It is south of Nashville. If I could use a kayak that you sit on top of instead of inside of wouldn't be so bad. Luckily for us we did not tump over at all and never have been in a canoe. Our trip was 7 miles. Elk River in Missouri is probably a good ways from Memphis though! Farther than Linden, Tennessee. Linden has a part of the Buffalo River.

My old homestate of Missouri has some fantastic float streams. Granted, you'll have quite a drive from Memphis but a trip down the Current, Jacks Fork, Meramac or Big Piney rivers are great. Plenty of sand bars to stop at. The Meramac and Current become big party rivers on the weekend but during the week you've got them to yourselves. The Buffalo is supposed to be one of the prettiest floats in the country.

canoeing
If you guys like to canoe, kayak, tube or anything like that, I've got the place for you: Mt. Fork River near Broken Bow, Okla. It is very beautiful, cold running water all of the time, falls, rapids, trout fishing, sand bars, you name it! My friends have a canoe/kayak rental business (they also have the kind you sit on top of) and cabin rentals. If you are from Texas you have probably already been here lol! If anyone is interested, I'll be glad to put you in touch!

We had no problem out of mosquitoes or yellow flies either one at Econfina Creek last year. But we went in early September and they may not be around then. But I can tell you, the biting flies were all over the beach. Hated them. Yeah, it is some work maneuvering those canoes, especially when you have never been in one before. We had a little bit of a rough start but got better at it. Saw a huge blue heron. Was beautiful!
