Litter on our beach, pay $500 fine.

Litter on our beach, pay $500 fine. | pcbdaily.com

I think the people who litter should be the ones fined, not the property owners. Last year was my 1st spring break and it was crazy how many cans where all over the beach. I dont know the laws down there, but here in Michigan everyone likes going tubbing down the river. There is no glass what so ever and keep all your empties in your cooler or a bag, get caught get fined. People that live on the river get mad to with all the drunk and loud people that go down the river, but at least its clean for the most part except for peeing in the river which I am guilty of also.

I would be a huge supporter of this. I firmly beleive that if you are consuming, you are responsible for your waste.

Growing up in Texas, I remember clearly the "don't mess with TX" campaigns, and actually the media blitz that plastered the state with that all through the 90's has instilled in me to not be a litter bug.

Because of that impressionable campaign, I've grown up alway looking for that trash can, or just throwing the trash in my car floor until I get home.

The breakers and visitors that come to our area need to know that if they are not responsible with their trash, they could get fined, big time.

thoughts?

1 thought would be putting more trash cans out on the beaches.
Here is Michigan we get 10 cents for most cans and bottles. That would take a little more work to get that deal done.
Whatever they come up with I hope it helps out. I had a blast down there and did my fair share of drinking but I put our empties back in our cooler, but I made sure I kept my sandles on while I was on the beach.
I will be back for PCB 2010 and hope they can figue out a way to keep the beach a little cleaner, but it does come down to how someone respects the beach. But I sure wouldnt want to get a $500 fine.

Definitely need more garbage cans, especially when they are expecting heavier crowds (SB, 4th of July). We should all take care of the beach and gulf, it gives us so much in return.

I think there should be a fine for throwing cigarette butts out too. The beach is littered with those things most of the time.

I agree! A couple of years ago, the people in the next condo spent their entire vacation on the balcony smoking & then flinging their butts (cigarette, that is ) onto the sand. By the end of the week, it looked like a giant ashtray!

I would support all of the above! Problem would be enforcing it. Too bad people don't use a little common courtesy. It's not much trouble at all to plan ahead and bring something you can use to dispose of trash or rettes. I end up picking up someone else's trash almost every time I go to the beach (or anywhere outdoors).

Good topic.

Enforcement would be difficult but the fine is a great idea. We always bring something for our own trash but it's not hard to load it with bottle caps and other items. I do think that it's a good topic to put out there Onix10p. Maybe it will help beach lovers be aware of their responsibilities and like all things in nature keep it clean.

Enforcement would be the problem, I just wish people would do the right thing the first time around.

We just got back last night and the beach was beautiful as always but again the trash abounds. My daughter and I picked some up each time we went out. It's kind of sad when a 4 year old looks at you and says "people shouldn't do that Daddy." Now she just calls them the "trash goobers". I tend to agree.

I'd support the fine all day. I fuss about the trash every time I head out to the beach. It's sad that people are too lazy to be responsible and dispose of their trash legally. I shouldn't have to worry about buried beer cans every time I go out to the beach either. It's all part of the reason I very rarely go to the beach around any of the party hotels now-a-days. I've found me a nice little spot down the west end of the beach that I like to frequent just b/c of all the trash in other places.
