Could a ban on fishing be in our future?

I know it sounds crazy but according to a lengthy but informative article by Robert Montgomery of ESPN Outdoors such a ban could be in the works with the quiet creation of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force. This ban would include the "nations oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters " and could be set in motion with an executive order by President Obama. Check it out! http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/s...ory?id=4975762

Same here! We sell hunting and fishing license where I work and an official from the state had suggested such an item could be in the works. I started looking online for any information I could find when I came upon the ESPN article. There is no way this has anything to do with conservation. Like most things I'm sure there is a "money trail" to follow as we would have to import the fish we would eat. Even if we look beyond the recreational loss there would be a HUGE loss of industry employment. Looks like it's time for angler uprising!

Here's an article on that article...it looks like a misinformed reporter's work got seized upon by a bunch of right-wing bloggers to start another one of those "Obamaz taken away my freedomz" tidal waves.

And another:

Quote:
The only problem is that these "regulations" don't exist. What Montgomery was writing about is the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force that has been charged by the White House with developing a comprehensive federal policy for managing the nation's waterways. Yes, they are interested in conservation and they are interested in setting new guidelines for fishing policies—but that includes commercial fishing policies that are threatening to deplete our food supply. Except they haven't even gotten that far yet. All they've released is an interim report [PDF] that discusses what their goals are, none of which involve a ban on fishing. In fact, from what I can tell it's completely generic legalese that contains no actionable policy recommendations in it all. It says zip about recreational fishing, never mind any sort of plan to curtail it.

Thank God and thanks for the links. At this point nothing is too shocking when it comes to the government no matter who's runnung the show,(like the proposed oyster ban).

We bit it.... hook, line and sinker!

If ESPN weren't my favorite channel, I'd be mad.

Same here man! It's my bad all the way. Like I said early on we sell license where I work and a rep in that department of the state passed on some info he had heard. Then later on I did some searches and landed on the ESPN article. I've used "Deadspin" in the past to do a fact-check but this time I was either short on Redbull or long on Land shark but I missed the target completely! Fortunately ShawnS323 dug MUCH deeper than I did so we're out of the woods (or back in the water as the case may be). Gotta go find my bottle opener now! Peace!
