Icon2 Best Route Troy,AL to W.Panama City Beach

Driving down from WI to help support the economy for a 2 week stay in mid-Dec. I've narrowed the route to 2 choices.

1. Troy 231-167-79....seems to be most popular from what I have read.

2. Troy 231-87-81-20-79 not mentioned much but anyone take both of these and which one is best?

Just driving straight thru, no frills needed, want to get there fast as possible. THANKS!! Dave

I go that way from Missouri and have only followed #1.

Google maps estimates #2 to be 8 minutes faster.

Dave,
From Troy,
231-87 turns into 167-79 is the best route. you will save a lot of time and miss some small town speed traps out side of Dothan AL. and the congestion of Dothan. I have gone both ways and the Rt.79 to PCB is the best. The highway is Great and not congested. Watch out for FL. highway patrol. do the limit and no problems. (kind of like Wisconsin) 79 will bring you highway 98 almost to the parking lot of PCB
tourist center. We will be on are way in a few months. Have a good trip.

Another time saver

I forgot to mention, I assume you are taking I65.
To bypass Montgomery AL Take 85 east towards Atlanta. Go to Exit 9 which is Rt.271 or Taylor Rd. That will take you down to 231 in a matter of minutes... much quicker than any alternative.
You can pull up on Google mapquest for Montgomery Al and see this is a quicker Rt. around the city, I know this seems out of the way, as I thought when I first went this way, but it isn't.

Thanks Bob and PCB. Sounds like 167/79 is the best and most preferred from all I could research.

Yes, others have suggested the I-85 to Atlanta, exit 9 Taylor to 231 so that is our planned spur.

Have a great day !!! Dave

Being from Troy I think you will find choice 1 your best route of choice. Steer clear of Dothan it is very congested. Also the four lane project on Hwy 79 has really improved driving time. Have a great trip.

Awesome! Hope you had a great time. Looked like it was a bit cool down there this past week. But you still can't beat the beach!
