Girls Gone Wild - Right or Wrong?
With the recent controversy over Girls Gone Wild filming in PCB, we thought we'd ask you what your thoughts are.
Without getting too deep into the legal aspects of it... Should GGW be allowed to document Spring Break, even when illegal nudity is involved (and possibly illegal solicitation of nudity)? "It's Spring Break - leave 'em alone and let them have fun." Or should officials hold GGW responsible if they solicit nudity and break the law. And possibly arrest students for exposing themselves in public (which is also illegal)? "We have laws for a reason, and they must be enforced consistently as any law should." Of course, it's never as simple as stated above, but you get the general idea... I think I already know what the results will be. Here's a little background on what's been going on the last few weeks: Thread 1 Thread 2 Last edited by swn5363; March-13th,2003 at 11:10 AM. |

In my opinion, there are more important issues that the mayor of PCB should be concerned about. Spring break brings his town a LOT of money. He shouldn't be so intrusive on what's going on, if it's not harmful to the city.
I think he should be more concerned about things such as how much money it costs to clean up the strip when spring break is done. He should concentrate on how to get more (clearly marked) emergency exits placed into the most popular clubs. And he should be more concerned about hotels raising their prices 150% during spring break. And MAYBE underage drinking...but ggw...come on now. Let people do what they like if it's not harming anyone else. The only reason the city is attacking ggw is because it gets the most attention, and brings publicity to their camp. |

It seems PCB wrestles every year with the question of whether spring break is worth the trouble. Families and well-off tourists drop a lot more money, with less people per room and lots less need for police and other public services.
Let me say that I am all for flashing (see link at end of post) but I'm just looking at all aspects for now. Sorry spring breakers, but that money you scraped together to share a room with 5 other people, stocking up at Wal-Mart, never patronizing a nice restaurant or other upscale tourist shops and attractions doesn't make up for the drain on local governments. On the flip side, today's spring breakers are the next decade of visitors to bring their families and the decade after that to come down for a vacation at a higher end resort, not thinking twice about spending cash to eat, fish, play, and have a good time. So taken that into account, marketing to spring breakers I think is positive for the area! With bare a** on network TV and HBO showing plenty of human anatomy, the mayor and authorites are going well overboard to chase them off. At least if for the moral reasons. If worried about riots breaking out and crowd control, they have a legitimate worry. Coordinating security, etc. And if many locals didn't find spring break such a pain to be endured, there would probably be support for working something out. But any politician who worked to help make smooth running of an event that many think is morally wrong and that others don't even want around in general (spring break) is going to find a tough road on election day. Since I gotta put a plug in for my city, bring those beads to Las Vegas for New Years and see some girls go wild: http://photos.accessvegas.com/cgi-bi...ars_2003_Girls Last edited by tedinvegas; March-13th,2003 at 05:30 PM. |

I grew up in Panama City, so I've seen this controversy happening over the last 10 years or so.
One thing I can say is that the officials have always tried to discourage nudity in public. Over the years, I've seen club owners arrestd... girls and guys arrested... bar managers... and I've even seen them haul off the MC of the contest in handcuffs (when a wet t or bikini contest got out of hand). It's been going on here for a long time. And they are not just going after Girls Gone Wild. They go after everyone. That being said, I've also seen them be very understanding and give plenty of warnings and second chances. But when a club (or person, or company) repeatedly breaks the law, the officials are obligated to take action as part of their job. Sometimes they turn a blind eye and try to let people have their fun. But with a show like Girls rolling into town with a big tour bus and pay-per-view event, the officials can't ignore them. The people who live in Panama City know what goes on with Girls Gone Wild... everyone has seen the commercials by now... and that's a very controversial event for a small town like Panama City. Most of the businesses on the Beach appreciate the spike in revenue during Spring Break, but most agree that things can get out of hand and turn very bad for everyone if laws are allowed to be ignored. Ask yourself this: Would the city you grew up in allow Girls to have an event there without a certain amount of controversy? Just trying to give my 2 cents. Now I'm going to go pay $19.95 to watch it on pay-per-view and wish I was there! :D Last edited by tim c; March-13th,2003 at 09:55 PM. |

GGW should be allowed to film. However, its not going to stop me from bringing my video camera and bundle of beads. Girls are just having a little fun. It's not doing harm to the city in anyway. Everyone just bring the cameras and beads and we will get our show.
